Quick Hits: Class of 2019 South

The Class of 2019 South Showcase took place on Tuesday, June 5th, at Southwest Community College, in Summit, MS. The open event saw 16 rising senior prospects from across the state of Mississippi perform in front of several college coaches, and the Prep Baseball Report Mississippi scouting staff.

Today, the Prep Baseball Report Mississippi scouting staff takes another look at a few more quick hits, observations and revelations from Tuesday’s Class of 2019 South Showcase.

 

Mason Kendrick 3B / RHP / Purvis , MS / 2019

Lean 5-foot-10, 160-pound frame, athletic build with room to add strength. Quick twitch athlete that posted a 7.14 60-yard dash. Athletic defender with average hands, quick footwork, and clean exchanges. Short arm action into high-3/4 release with carry and accuracy on throws across, posting a positional velocity of 87 mph from outfield and 86 mph infield velocity. Right-handed hitter that hits from athletic, balanced setup with smooth load and short stride. Gap-to-gap, line-drive approach with fluid rhythm and tempo and a flat, on-plane path with bat speed that posted an exit velocity of 83 mph.

Jeffrey Diamond RHP / 3B / Presbyterian Christian, MS / 2019

Athletic 5-foot-11, 170-pounds with wiry build and room to add strength. A right-handed pitcher, Diamond shows a short, clean arm action into high-3/4 release with quick arm speed and regular effort. Delivery is athletic with solid direction and fluid rhythm. Pitched 80-82 mph with fastball showing solid fill for the zone and occasional life. Breaking ball showed 11/5 shape with solid spin at 69-70 mph also flashed a changeup that displayed fading action. Diamond showed off solid arm strength with carry on throws positionally, posting an outfield velocity of 89 mph and 83 mph from infield. At the plate the right-handed hitter also displayed quick hands with a rotational flat path that produced an exit velocity of 84 mph.

Bo Gatlin SS / RHP / Oxford, MS / 2019

Gatlin had arguably the best all-around day posting in the top of several statistical categories. The athletic 5-foot-11, 175-pound frame utility player started the day showing solid athleticism by posting a 6.87 60-yard dash time. During the defensive evaluations, Gatlin worked through balls fluidly on the with smooth footwork and adequate arm strength with carry on throws, recording a positional velocity of 86 mph from outfield and 84 mph from infield. At the plate, the right-handed hitter showed a loose swing, and bat speed that produced an event high 96 mph exit velocity. Finished the day with a solid showing on the mound, working from a high-3/4 release with fluid rhythm and controlled delivery, Gatlin was able to run his fastball up to 83 mph. Dominated the zone the during bullpen, showing the ability to command multiple pitches.

Landon Rawson RHP / OF / Central Holmes Chrisitan, MS / 2019

Athletic, wiry 6-foot-1, 170-pound frame with room to add strength. Short, loose arm action into 3/4 release with quick arm speed and regular effort. Delivery shows deception and athleticism with fluid rhythm working into a lowered arm slot. Displayed fill for the zone with multiple pitches, throwing fastball that had solid arm side life at 81-83 mph and a slider that had sweeping, lateral action at 73-75 mph.

John Cartwright C / 1B / Madison Ridgeland academy , MS / 2019

A physically developed 6-foot-2, 240-pound frame with strong build. The left-handed hitter had one of the better rounds of batting practice on the day blasting balls from gap-to-gap. Hitting from a tall and athletic setup with smooth, simple load  and direct path, Cartwright was able to produce line-drive contact with strength to the pull side posting a 95 mph exit velocity. Defensively he showed solid catch and throw skills, posting pop times ranging 1.93-1.99 seconds.
