Mississippi Preseason ID: Quick Hits

Matt Miller
State Director

GOODMAN, MS - The Mississippi Preseason ID was held on Saturday, January 20th at Holmes CC in Goodman, MS. This event was an open event that consisted of some prospects from the 2024-2027 classes across all parts of Mississippi. These players went through extended pro-style workout that included batting practice using Trackman, and much more. Pitchers were able to throw bullpens and were able to get numbers and metrics via TrackMan. There were some players who showed up and continued to build off of prior performances, but there were also some new names who jumped onto our radar with a strong showing at the event.

Kicking off our post-event coverage for this event, we take a look back at some of the top performers and standouts from Saturday. Continuing over the course of the next week or so, we will release different statistical leaderboards for the event along with other pieces of content.

QUICK HITS

Cameron Murphy OF / 2B / Brandon, MS / 2025

Cameron Murphy of Brandon was a standout at this past weekend’s Preseason ID held at Holmes CC. The right handed hitter used a very fundamentally sound swing which resulted in plenty of line drives during his batting practice round. Murphy used a controlled load and stride with a middle of the field approach. In the outfield he showed a very polished look with accuracy and velocities up to 85 mph to the plate. As he continues is overall body development look for Murphy to draw plenty of attention from recruiters.

JD Whitaker RHP / 2B / Hamilton, MS / 2026

JD Whitaker of Hamilton turned some heads over the weekend during his bullpen. Using a very repeatable delivery and fastball velocity up to 84 mph, Whitaker was all over the strike zone and with his lanky frame more velocity should come in time. He also showed very solid feel and command with his breaking ball which produced spin up to 2536 rpms. This arm could be huge for Hamilton over the next few years.

Tre'veon Rainey OF / 2B / Heritage Academy, MS / 2024

Tre'veon Rainey of Heritage Academy produced some of the higher exit velocities this past weekend. The muscular right handed hitter used a short compact swing with quick hands while working the middle of the field with low line drives and exit velocities consistently in the upper 80’s. Rainey has the ability to play multiple positions both on the infield and in the outfield though as the arm continues to strengthen left field or second base look to be the best fits.

Weston Floyd 1B / RHP / East Rankin Academy, MS / 2025

Weston Floyd of East Rankin Academy used a very polished and repeatable delivery on Saturday and with his size and frame could garner some attraction this spring and summer. The righty worked into the low 80’s thought as the weather warms he should settle into the mid 80’ with a possibility of even more. Floyd’s secondary stuff was a stolid as well as he killed the spin well on his changeup and had very solid command with his curveball that had good late bite.

Jones Roberson 1B / RHP / Washington, MS / 2027

Jones Roberson of Washington School was a Junior Future Games representative this summer and continues to progress into a bat that will be sought after in a couple of years. The sturdy right handed hitter has very quick hands and as his barrel control becomes more consistent we could see a solid power bat on the rise. Roberson shows gap to gap pop at the plate now though with added loft could find the other side of the wall quite often in the future. On defense, the rising freshman already is a sure handed first baseman with a developing arm.
