2021 Future Games: Team Carolina Preview-Pitchers

Matt Payne
Director of Scouting, PBR of NC

The PBR Future Games has quickly become the top recruiting stop for college coaches across the country.  A massive turnout of college coaches is expected at the LakePoint complex in Emerson, GA this week. The PBR Future Games feature the top uncommitted, underclass players in the country, all in one spot.

Beginning Wednesday July 28th, Team Carolina, made up of NC and SC underclass players, will begin their journey through the Future Games.  Wednesday is a workout day with position players going through a full pro-style workout. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday will feature live game play with Team Carolina taking on Team Florida, Team Mid-Atlantic, and Team Georgia.

We begin our previews of Team Carolina by taking a look at the pitchers from NC that will be looking to make waves this week.  A mix of projection, arm speed, and arm strength will draw eyes throughout the weekend.

Team Carolina Preview-Pitchers

LUKE BROWNRHP / MIDDLE CREEK, NC / 2023

The 6-foot-7 right hander has plenty of projection ahead. The fastball has been up to 89 mph and the arm action and frame suggests more to come in the near future. Also, shows feel for his secondary offerings.

RYAN HENCHRHP / OF / ORANGE, NC / 2023

Strength present in a durable 6-foot-2 frame. His fastball has been up to 86 mph and he has above average arm speed. Slider has hard, late break and his changeup creates deception. He has feel for three pitches and there looks to be more in the tank.

TERRY KALERLHP / 1B / NORTHWEST CABARRUS , NC / 2023

6-foot-3 frame has plenty of room for maturation ahead. Impressed during the high school season with his fastball reaching 88 mph with life to his arm side. Breaking ball has potential with flashes of late 2/8 tilt. The left hander stilll has plenty of room to reach his ceiling.

JACOB KIRBYRHP / 1B / ARDREY KELL, NC / 2023

Athletic, projectable frame at 6-foot-4. Continues to progress each time we see him. Advanced feel for pitching moving the ball around in the zone. Fastball has been up to 86 mph. Has shown a tight breaking ball with spin rates reaching the 2700s.

CALEB WILLIAMSRHP / OF / ALEXANDER CENTRAL , NC / 2023

Arm speed stands out. Fastball reaches 88 mph with arm side run and feel for the zone. Flashes feel for both his breaking ball and changeup. Frame and arm speed suggest high ceiling ahead.

JAMES NESTA

RHP / OF / HOUGH , NC / 2024

Long, lanky and athletic at 6-foot-5, 180-pounds. Frame has plenty of room for maturation ahead. Loose arm with easy effort to his delivery. Fastball has reached 87 mph and there should be plenty more to come in the coming years.

MASON BOTBOL LHP / 1B / NEW HANOVER , NC / 2023

The left-hander stood out at the Team Carolina Prospect ID in Mooresville, NC. Repeatable delivery with above average feel for locating his fastball to the bottom of the strike zone. His 6-foot-3 frame with length has projection ahead.

GARRETT MACKOWIAKLHP / OF / COMBINE ACADEMY, NC / 2023

Quick, athletic arm. The fastball has run to his arm side topping at 86 mph earlier this year. Throws his breaking ball with aggression that has late 2/8 tilt. His changeup has potential to be a solid third pitch.

TAYLOR RABERHP / 1B / GREENVILLE SENIOR , SC / 2023

Athletic, projectable arm who has had a good summer pitching for the Southern Athletics. Arm is quick with reports of his fastball getting into the mid 80s.
