Commitment Tracker: 3 Future Game Players Pledge Their Commitment

Brandon Hall
North Carolina Director of Scouting

The North Carolina Commitment Tracker will be a weekly blog to track players and programs through the recruiting process.  Each week we will look players that have pledged their commitment with back ground on select players and their process.  We will also look total commitment numbers across the state and profile select schools as they work to complete their 2019 class.

As the signing period has begun and Thanksgiving is arriving, one may expect the commitments to slow down as schools re-group and as players hit their off-season programs.  However, if one is expecting it to slow down, one would be wrong.  This past week saw a big push with 27 commitments inside the state of North Carolina.  The western schools at the Division I level were at the forefront with Appalachian St, Western Carolina, and UNC Asheville combining for 7 of the 27 commitments.

Three North Carolina players that were a part of the prestigious PBR Future Games, representing Team Carolina this past August made their decisions this past week.  With the commitments of Gus Hughes (RHP, Grimsley HS, 2020), Gavin Mortenson (SS, Northwest Guilford HS, 2020), and Ben Peterson (RHP, Apex HS, 2020), Team Carolina has seen 7 of its 17 members commit with more coming.

Hughes was dynamic in his first outing in Indianapolis for Team Carolina running his fastball up to 90 mph and blowing hitters doors off.  He mixed in a sharp, top to bottom breaking ball that allowed the fastball to play at the top of the zone.  Hughes committed to Charlotte this week after entertaining schools from across the country.
