Pitchers

Josh Sadler, LHP, Clayton HS, NC (2019)

Lanky build, with long levers, in the 5-foot-10, 134 pound frame.  Flashed the ability to control the strike zone with all 3 pitches.  Fastball sat 69-70, working from a high-3/4 slot, that would slip lower at times.  Rolling through the balance point, working from a tall setup, the shoulders stay level throughout, with a choppy rhythm.  The lower half coils out of balance, creating a little bit of a slinging action with the arm.  The breaking ball flashes depth and spin, while inconsistent at this young age, ranging 58-59mph.  Hand speed remains close to fastball fastening a 1/7 shape to the good breaking balls.  Change-up creates some arm side action while registering 61-62, with look-alike hand speed.  As the young frame adds strength the arm speed may create tighter stuff.

Randy Floyd, RHP, Fairmont HS, NC (2018)

Athletic, while thin, at 5-foot-11, 146 pounds.  Arm works with quickness through the high-3/4 slot, from a long, and strong, arm swing.  Good balance and easy effort comes from a tempo that can be quickened and evened out.  Fastball touched 85, sitting 82-84.  The slider is an out-pitch waiting to happen… peaking at 69 with late sweeping action and depth.  Slider mimics fastball throughout the arm motion and late into the pitch break.  Change-up is the 3rd pitch, but is serviceable.  Ranging 74-76, with look-alike arm speed.  Does a good job of controlling the strike zone with all three.

Aaron Smith, RHP, Gray’s Creek HS, NC (2020)

Young athlete with a maturing frame.  Stands 5-foot-11, 165 pounds with strength beginning to develop and show.  Fastball worked to 76, ranging 74-76 from a high-3/4 slot with a long, loose arm action.  Average arm speed and regular effort allowed for a solid mechanical base that is repeated.  Head remains consistent throughout the motion, and all three pitches, allowing for a feel for command and deception.  Change-up is ahead of breaking ball right now, sitting 64-65.  The arm slows some, and the pitch has a tendency to cut, while filling up the zone.  The curveball ranged 59-61 with 11/5 gradual action.  The arm slowed creating some inconsistency in location.

Isaac Gonzalez, LHP, Pine Forest HS, NC (2020)

Left hander has begun to make strides after seeing him earlier in the summer.  Works from a high-3/4 slot with a long, loose arm action.  Slow tempo in the delivery to the balance point creates some effort in the body, while showing an ability to repeat the delivery.  Arm speed has begun to improve with the fastball ranging 73-75, flashing arm side run.  Fastball seems heavy and pounded the zone.  Change-up is the second pitch now sitting 63-64 with near look-alike arm speed.  Change flashed fade while consistently in the zone.  The curveball touched 65 with gradual 1/7 action.  The arm quickness on fastball and change was not consistent on the breaking ball.  5-foot-11, 170 pound frame has some strength in it and should continue to grow with time.

Ryan Lyda, LHP, Bandys HS, NC (2019)

Projection left in the 5-foot-11, 170 pound lefty.  Fastball reached 71, sitting 69-71.  Both curveball and change-up show promise.  The curveball touched 58 with 1/7 gradual break.  The change sat 63-64 with some arm side fade and deception.  Both off-speed pitches work with near fastball arm speed and show an ability to be in the zone.  Better than average arm speed with a long arm stroke work to a high-3/4 slot.  The head leaves the line early creating some effort in the torso, moving forward, allowing the arm to lag at times.  The front side works with a glove point and a choppy rhythm.  Little things that can be cleaned may allow for a higher upside in the near future.
