High School Crosscheck: Week 12
May 7, 2018
Georgia was a popular stop on the scouting trail last week with a big pitching matchup in the playoffs and a workout that featured some big arms. You can read more about the workout that featured RHP Ethan Hankins (Forsyth Central HS, GA) in the latest installment of The Rode Show. Just a couple days prior, RHPs Kumar Rocker (North Oconee HS, GA) and Cole Wilcox (Heritage HS, GA) squared off in Game 1 of the second round of the state tournament. Wilcox ultimately got the better end of Rocker, allowing three runs (one earned) on three hits and three walks while striking out eight in a complete game. Rocker lasted just four innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits and two walks while striking out three.
A big kid in his own right, the 6-foot-5, 220-pound Wilcox has always been a competitor on the mound. He is unique in that he has a long arm action that comes through a low-3/4 to 3/4 slot. When he pitches from a true 3/4 slot, he shows better life to his fastball, as he did on this day. He ran it up to 97 mph and sat 93-95. He showed better shape on his slider and the feel for his changeup is markedly improved as well.
Rocker is an imposing figure on the mound at 6-foot-6, 260 pounds. He has very long arms and is a good athlete. It’s tough to find a major league comparison for his frame, but it’s still easy to love the size and stuff. He has a clean arm action that works out of a high-3/4 slot relying on angle over life. Although he ran his fastball into the mid 90s, he pitched off his breaking ball, which was 77-81. It gets caught between a curveball and slider at times, but flashes good shape and bite.
In other action from high school draft prospects…
