Providence – 2 Reagan – 15
An opening game matchup between two clubs that have state championship aspiration was close early, before the Reagan Raiders pulled away and ended the game after 5. Uber prospect, LHP Josh Hartle was on the bump for the Raiders and got the win.
Providence jumped on Hartle in the first, scoring 2 runs. David Garfinkle walked to leadoff the game and stole 2B. Following a strikeout, Garfinkle would score on a Jeremy Beamon single to right. Beamon would advance all the way to 3B on the play at the plate. A Luke Woolf safety squeeze would score Beamon, giving Providence a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the 1st.
The Raiders offense would strike back quickly. Tommy Hawke got on to leadoff via the hit by pitch. A single by Colby Welborn would score Hawke, who stole 2B. Hartle walked to put two on. A double steal would see Hartle advance to 2B and Welborn would score, tying the game, on an errant throw. Noah Quarless grounded out to short, scoring Hartle.
The one run lead would be enough for Hartle. The senior lefty spent part of his off-season recovering from a minor medical issue. He is still regaining a lot of his strength, but the comfort on the bump returned in the 2nd inning where he punched out the side. Reagan went right back to work increasing their lead to 7-2 after two.
Hartle would face the minimum over his final four innings of work, only allowing a hit by pitch in the 5th. For the game he threw 70 pitches, 46 for strikes, striking out 9 and only walking 1. The Raider offense would score 8 in the bottom of the 4th, paced by 5 consecutive walks to start the inning. In the inning, Reagan recorded two hits, the big one a double from Hartle to make it 15-2.
