COMMITMENT Q AND A

PBR:  Tell us all about your recruitment process, when it started, and why you decided to commit to Siena College?

O'Bryan:  My recruitment process was a roller coaster. I have played travel baseball since the age of 11 and have been going to exposure events since middle school. However, I was considered to be a “late bloomer.” I have always been tall, but my body did not start filling out until this past year. My hitting over the years has been kind of streaky, but after countless hours of hard work and repetition in the spring, I was able to find my flow and stay hot at the plate throughout the entire summer, hitting for both average and power. I have always had a good arm, but it was not until this summer that my coaches consistently put me on the mound which gave me a chance to improve greatly as a pitcher as well as giving me the chance to show off my arm’s potential. My running also drastically improved too, and I had more opportunities this summer than ever before to show my athleticism in the outfield. All of this improvement is what is desired before junior year, not after, since your junior year is typically the big recruiting year. I started to fear that I would slip through the cracks, and the abilities I was continuing to improve as well as my overall potential would go unnoticed by the colleges I was interested in playing at. Siena College has always been at the top of my list since I visited the school and took a tour over the winter. I just felt a connection on campus that I did not feel at any other college I visited in the following months. Siena was always like that goal I had in mind every time I stepped on the field, and keeping that high level mindset helped me perform on the diamond unlike ever before this summer. Siena coaches happened to be at a showcase tournament I played at over the summer and after they watched me play they invited me to a camp. I attended the camp and played well there, and I kept in touch with the coaches over the following weeks. Despite being in touch with several other colleges at the DI, DII, DIII and JUCO levels respectively, Siena College was always what I came back to when weighing out my options. After a phone call with Coach Rossi and discussions with my family and my coaches, I excitedly announced my commitment in October. It is the perfect fit for me both academically and athletically and it was the ultimate satisfaction knowing that I accomplished a dream with hard work and dedication.

PBR:  Looking at your skillset on the baseball field, what would you say your biggest strength at the next-level will be?

O'Bryan:  My arm and my overall athleticism. These two aspects were the major points of interest in every college that has contacted me. I can throw 90 mph+ from the outfield. With repetition of mechanics and strengthening my body, I should be able to get my velocity off the mound to what it is from the outfield along with throwing even harder from the outfield than I do now. My athletic abilities like my speed is also something that will help me succeed at the next level, especially in the outfield. Speed kills; in the field and on the base paths and I definitely plan on utilizing my athleticism to help my team at the college level.

PBR:  What’s your No. 1 priority going into the Winter in terms of getting prepared for next spring?

O'Bryan:  My mindset going into the winter is to do whatever it takes to succeed. I want to help my high school team win this year and then help Siena after high school graduation. To do this, I will be putting in hours of training every week, both baseball and weight training to strengthen my body. I will definitely be honing in on my pitching throughout the offseason. My pitching is at a raw state as of now, so I will be working to be prepared to throw at a high level once the season comes. I also want to make sure I make adjustments from an offensive standpoint so I can be as effective as possible at the plate this season. I want to come into my senior season stronger and have more success on the diamond than ever before, so I will put in everything I possibly can these next couple of months.

PBR:  Who is your biggest influence when it comes to playing the game of baseball?

O'Bryan:  My mom. She has stuck by my side through all of the ups and downs. She has made huge sacrifices for me over all the years to have the opportunities that I have and I owe so much to her. I am truly blessed to have such a great and loving mom.

PBR:  Prep Baseball Report’s No. 1 goal is to provide players with an unrivaled platform filled with next-level exposure through events and multi-media avenues. What’s your experience been with us?

O'Bryan:  My experience with PBR has been great. I played at the New York Games in June at Binghamton and had an amazing experience. The PBR staff was very sociable and the event itself was very well organized. I have never seen more scouts in a single setting. PBR definitely gets it done in terms of exposure for players. It is also very nice to have follow up support throughout the college process from PBR.
