Inside The Rankings: Two SS's Primed to Climb

Dan Cevette
President, New York

The New York rankings, class by class, are constantly being updated and expanded quietly the more we see player's through our scouted events. An overall updated rankings will be released this March for all classes once our heavy winter showcase season ends. Today we take an inside look at two shortstops, one from the 2019 class, and one from the 2020 class, that are primed to make a climb come spring. Both infielders hail from Upstate New York roughly 90 miles apart from each other.

2019 Class

Santino Rosso SS / 2B / Victor , NY / 2019

The 2019 WNY shortstop has attend three events with PBR since January of 2016. Up 30-pounds and four inches in height since we first met, Rosso is continuing to develop into one of the top defensive infielders in WNY. Currently ranked No. 109 in the state, look for Rosso to make significant climbs after we see him Feb. 19 at our Pre-season West event.  At the plate he's a switch hitter that shows more power and ease from the left-side. The swing path is compact, there's rhythm and looseness to his hands, and the bat-speed will continue to climb. Defensively his glove is as solid as any playing the position, footwork should continue to quicken, and the arm-strength (80 mph) is expected to make that "next" jump this spring/summer. Excited to see him in February and at the NYS Games.

2020 Class

Kobe Stenson SS / Liverpool, NY / 2020

Stenson stormed onto our scene back in Aug of last summer where the sure-handed MIF impressed both with the bat and the glove. Standing at 5-foot-7, 145-pounds there's no question he will naturally add 20-pounds to the frame. He's already fast-twitch and full of athleticism when he's on the field. In the box he's slightly passive but the bat is loose, path is consistent and the finish is full. Low effort but the ball still jumps off the bat, once he adds more size and strength the bat-speed and juice will follow. Defensively I would take him up against any 2020 in the state. Very active lower half, fast yet soft hands, quick release with an already above average arm across the diamond (80 mph). Currently ranked No. 20 in the 2020 class but that's simply because we haven't done an overall update, once we do expect Stenson to climb.
