2021 Ohio Top Prospect Games: Quick Hits - The Backstops Performed Well

This event is absolutely loaded so each position group is strong but the group that stood out most this year was the guys behind the dish.

Dominic Brancel C / OF / Hawken, OH / 2023

Report: 2023 C Dominic Brancel (Hawken HS) has been high on our list since summer and continues to prove why we have him rated as a top 3 catcher in his class. Cerebral defender with feel for the game and advanced receiving abilities. Offensively, he’s near the total package when it comes to movement efficiency, natural tools, and the ability to square up the baseball. Brancel can flat out play.

Nathan Manley C / 3B / Moeller, OH / 2023

Report: Far from an unknown commodity on the recruiting scene is 2023 C Nate Manley out of Moeller HS. The backstop already holds D1 offers and it’s not hard to see why. A confident dude between the lines who has an aggressive nature on both sides of the ball. Will pull the trigger early in the count in the box and swings with intent to do damage. Behind the dish he will throw early and often/a guy who base runners can’t ever get comfortable on. Tools speak for themself as he generates upper 90s EV, upper 70s velocity from the crouch and elite workout pop times.

Garrett Wright C / SS / Jackson, OH / 2023

Report: 2023 C Garrett Wright out of Jackson HS is fun to watch play. Defensively he has an advanced skill set across the board. Quick feet, big arm and well +avg receiving abilities. The IQ shows back there as well but also translates into the box. Ideal top of the lineup skill set whose ability to spray it around the yard combined with impressive feel for the zone make him a high on base machine.

Will Kocher C / OF / Kings, OH / 2023

Report: A guy with some of the highest upside on this list is ‘23 Will Kocher out of Kings HS. 6-foot-2, good athlete (also talented QB), middle of the order profile, and absolute rocket behind the dish. A guy who has all the physical traits to be a run stopper behind the dish and run producer in the box.

Ryan Jackson C / SS / Bowling Green, OH / 2022

Report: It’s been well documented how impressive ‘22 C Ryan Jackson (Bowling Green HS) behind the dish when we’ve been in attendance and that was once again on display, but the performance with the bat may have been the best we’ve seen from him yet. He frequently squared up the baseball and handled velocity relatively easily against some of the state’s top arms. Per usual defensively he was an athletic presence back there with a big time arm that is also very accurate, and quality in-game receiving/blocking skills.
