Ben Zink RHP / OF / Northmont, OH / 2022

CLAYTON - Hard work is nothing new for Ben Zink.

Wright State found that out over the past year.

“I started talking to them last year,” the Northmont sophomore related. “I went to one of their camps and they said they wanted to see how I developed over the next year.”
The Horizon League school found out in November when Zink participated in another camp at Wright State.

“I was 88 on the mound and my exit velo was 101, the highest by far that it’s ever been,” Zink noted. “It was a huge jump for me over the last year.”

It did not take Wright State long to recognize the improvement made.

“I called them the Monday after and they offered me,” Zink said. “It was an offer I couldn’t refuse.”

The hard work since that first Wright State camp had paid off.

“I was going to the gym to workout five days a week over the past year,” the 39th-ranked 2022 in the state said. “I worked pretty much non-stop with a pitching coach with lots of mechanics and medicine balls instead of baseballs. I hit three or four times a week and also hit with my summer coach once a week in the cage.”

The drive to improve is not a new development for the 6-0 195-pounder.

“I’d never been a standout player before I came to the Canes,” Zink said in reference to his summer team. “I sat on the bench my 12U season with a crappy travel team that went 2-24. That just made me want to work so I wasn’t sitting on the bench. It angered me so much. I hit a breaking point. I quit the team and found the Canes.”

Success did not come overnight.
