Payton Ebbing C / 3B / Cincinnati Country Day, OH / 2022Rankings StateRank: 8 / POS: 1
LOVELAND - Payton Ebbing admits to having “a chip on my shoulder” when it comes to his size.
“Some people say I’m too small to play in the SEC or to get drafted,” related Ebbing, who says he is 5-61/2 and weighs in at 170. “But I know I can do it.” While getting drafted will have to wait, the Cincinnati Country Day sophomore will get the opportunity to show what he can do in the Southeastern Conference after a recent commitment to Tennessee. “My summer team went to a tournament in Georgia where they first saw me,” the eighth-rated 2022 in Ohio explained. “We talked after the first couple games there and they said they really like what they saw. “On my way back to Ohio they were holding a camp at their complex in Knoxville. We stopped on our way home and I played well. The next day they sent out an offer. “That was two weeks prior to the Future Games,” Ebbing continued. “I told them I was not ready to make a decision before the Future Games because I wanted to see what happened. They were there and were at all my games. That was a deciding factor.” Other colleges at the Future Games showed a strong interest as well in the top-ranked Ohio catcher in his class. “That was a lot of fun,” noted Ebbing about the PBR event in which he drew interest from the likes of Cincinnati, Indiana and Georgia Tech in addition to Tennessee. “It was just a big part of the recruiting process, especially at such a young age.” |
