High School Crosscheck: Week 1

Nathan Rode and PBR Staff

Seasons are underway in warm weather states so the High School Crosscheck notebook is back, highlighting draft prospects seen by Prep Baseball Report staff the previous week. It’s early so the first entry is light, but with Florida getting preseason action going this week, things will escalate quickly.

In Texas, RHP Evan Vanek (Frisco Heritage HS, TX) popped some big numbers on the radar gun, sitting 93-95 mph in his first inning of work. The Texas A&M recruit stands at 6-foot-2, 175 pounds with a lean, muscular frame. He has a whippy arm swing with a reach in the back and medium stride as he comes through a low-3/4 slot. In that first inning, he worked around a couple errors and walk to strang the bases loaded. He sat mostly 91-93 after that, but still flashed 94 in the fourth. The fastball has tons of arm-side run at the bottom of the zone, but does flatten out above the belt. His slider is inconsistent with later, sweeping break at 75-79. He also threw a couple changeups at 86-87.
