OK Top Senior Games: Second Basemen Analysis

PBR OK hosted the third annual Top Senior Games at the beautiful and fully turfed Wendell Simmons Field at the University of Central Oklahoma. Nearly 50 players showcased their skill in front of the PBR OK staff and 15 colleges including 11 jucos, 2 Ds, and a D1.

Today, we take an in-depth look at the second basemen from the event. 

Sam Bass 2B / OF / Bishop McGuinness , OK / 2020

Displayed a stocky, filled out 6-foot, 210-pound frame. The right-handed hitter starts with a square stance with a slight bend at the knees while utilizing a controlled lift-and-replace stride. Barrel points straight up at the shoulder and hands move straight back upon load. Demonstrated solid sink into a strong backside creating backspin to all fields. Registered a 94 mph bat-exit velocity  with consistent, loud barrels. Recorded a 7.83 60-yard dash. Primary middle infielder featured adequate footwork with a soft glove-hand. Flashed accurate 76 mph arm-strength across the infield with a strong-lower half. A moderate takeaway coupled with a quick and short ¾ arm-stroke led to accurate throws. Due to size and speed will most likely move to a corner infield position at the next level. 

Tanner Collins 3B / 2B / Dale, OK / 2020

A durable 5-foot-8, 195-pound frame with some strength. Offensively, the right-handed hitter bats from a wide and open stance deep in his legs with rhythm throughout. Uses a rocking load with a short stride and late heel plant before launching his hands on a slightly uphill path through extension. In BP, shows and all field approach with some top spin and mostly barrels, 83 mph exit velo. Defensively, hands and feet work well, clean and deliberate, making every routine play. Throws with with a quick and moderate arm stroke coming through as near over the top slot with a quick release and accuracy at 73 mph. In the game, launched a two RBI double to the opposite field gap and lined out with a laser to left field. 

Cameron Funkhouser 2B / C / Fletcher, OK / 2020

Displayed a physical 5-foot-8, 180-pound frame with durability. The right-handed hitter begins from a bent, open stance with hands at the shoulder moving in a circular-motion. A high load coupled with a violent leg-kick allowed for a flat bat-path towards the baseball on impact. Demonstrated feel for a strong-lower half and a barrel yielding present whip through the zone. Registered an 86 mph bat-exit velocity . Recorded a 7.75 60-yard dash. Showcased adequate footwork during defensive evaluations with a soft glove-hand. Played low to the ground notching accurate throws of 75 mph from his position. Featured a moderate takeaway coming through a high ¾ arm stroke on the way forward. 

Jaxon Gregston 2B / SS / Duncan, OK / 2020

Featured a long and lean, 6-foot-1, 170-pound frame with projectability. The right-handed hitter starts from a straight up, 50/50 stance with a barrel pointing slightly towards the helmet. Loads straight back utilizing a quick toe-tap to initiate his swing while entering the zone at a negative attack angle. Hit to a stiff front-side with more available in the lower-half. Registered a 79 mph bat-exit velocity . Ran a 7.66 60-yard dash. Flashed an impressive series of plays during defensive evaluations with quick, low movements to both sides. Displayed a smooth, soft glove-hand starting low to the ground and giving or taking depending on the hop. Recorded an accurate 81 mph arm-strength from a quick, high ¾ arm-slot.
