Rising Uncommitted Arms

As the baseball season steadily creeps into the middle of the spring, the summer is just around the corner. This week, In the Weeds looks at some intriguing, uncommitted pitchers in the 2019 class. As college recruiters continue to shape their 2019 recruiting classes, pitching quickly becomes of vital importance. With four left-handed and four right-handed pitchers included on the list from around the country (CT, MD, NC, OK, TX, VA), each arm exhibits a chance to compete at the next level, and could blossom into an important piece given a chance to progress.

Hollis Huff LHP / OF / Norman North, OK / 2019

Huff’s quick left arm and long elastic frame should make him a very appealing recruit on the summer circuit and on into the fall. Long-limbed in a 6-foot-2, 176-pound frame, Huff showed off a velocity jump at PBR Oklahoma’s Preseason All-State event in February as he appears to be filling out his wiry frame. The fastball ran up as high as 87 mph coming out of a high ¾ slot with a deceptive delivery that includes aggressive drive off his back side. The southpaw works exclusively out of the stretch, and his quick arm allows for the ball to jump out of his hand making for an uncomfortable at-bat for hitters, especially left-handers. He counters his fastball with above average feel for a 1/7 curveball that he throws with fastball hand speed at 69-72. The pitch shows multi-tier break out of the same window as his fastball, and could become a swing and miss offering in the future. Huff’s command is still developing, some, but given the pure stuff that he exhibits, and his projectable frame, he should have a chance to evolve as a pitcher, and potentially get big outs coming out of the bullpen for a college program.
