Eastern PA Fall Review Analysis: Two-Way Players

By Jacob Gill
Pennsylvania Assistant Director of Scouting

The fall schedule of outdoor PBR events in Pennsylvania concluded last weekend with the 2016 Eastern PA Fall Review at Widener University. Over 30 prospects from two states gathered to showcase their abilities during the course of two nine-inning games and a showcase. Today we conclude our analysis of the prospects in attendance by taking a look at two-way performers.

FINAL MEASURABLES for all prospects in attendance

Connor Dewees, 2018, 3B/RHP, Red Lion Area
5-foot-10, 170-pound right-handed hitter. Stayed balanced and hit against his front side, while showing an ability to stay inside the baseball and create backspin during his BP round. Has pre-pitch rhythm in stance and swing has some looseness. While he didn't elevate anything during game action, he routinely barreled the baseball and an 85 mph exit velocity hints at potential gap power. Defensively, he showed solid actions with accurate 82 mph arm strength across the diamond.

Compact delivery with clean arm action into a high three-quarter slot. Fastball was fairly straight at 80-81, while he showed some feel for a big, loopy curveball with 11/5 action at 63-65.

Charles Kelley, 2018, RHP/2B, Father Judge
5-foot-11, 205-pound build. Gathers well over the rubber and has a long, hook arm action into a low three-quarter slot. Utilized both sides of the plate via a running two-seam fastball at 78-79 and a solid cutter at 73-75. Also incorporated a slider with short break at 68-70. A primary pitcher, Kelley hits from a square, right-handed stance with a deep load and some barrel wrap.

Mason Miller, 2018, LHP/OF, Garnet Valley
6-foot, 165-pounder who threw lots of strikes out of a three-quarter slot. Repeated a rhythmic delivery, landing slightly crossfire with a clean arm action  Showed an ability to get his fastball at 79-82 in on right-handed hitters. Occasional cast to the breaking ball at 69-70 caused it to vary in shape, but he maintains armspeed on it and it was most effective when it had sweeping slider action. Change-up at 73-74 was a lesser-used third pitch.

Left-handed hitter works from a square, upright stance with a simple swing that was at its best when he was peppering the opposite field. Posted an 80 mph exit velocity and ran a 7.44 60-yard dash with home-to-1B times in the 4.64-4.71 range. Exhibited solid defensive actions with 82 mph arm strength and made a diving catch in right field.

Ryan Rudrow, 2018, RHP/OF, Cumberland Valley
Lean 6-foot-2, 150-pounder pitches out of an over-the-top slot. Repeats his delivery, which includes a square toe landing and separation behind his midline. Got downhill well with a fastball at 74-76 that was mostly straight, but had occasional comeback on the gloveside. Best pitch was a 12/6 curveball with good depth at 65-66, while he did not have a great feel for his change-up at 67-70 on this day.

Right-handed hitter who starts from an open stance and strides to square. Armbar in load creates length and stiffness in his swing. Posted 77 mph exit velocity and ran a 7.28 60-yard dash. Long wind-up to release (not surprising, given he is a primary pitcher) for accurate 76 mph arm strength from the outfield.

Drew Swire, 2017, LHP/OF, Brandywine Heights
Lean 6-foot-1, 165-pounder who stayed on-line to the plate well and threw strikes. Stab out of the glove with some funk in his arm action into a high three-quarter slot. Fastball sat 72-74, while he showed a solid feel for a slow 1/7 curveball at 56-58, and would benefit from maintaining armspeed on his change-up at 56-57 that has one-plane fade.

Left-handed hitter who starts from a slightly closed stance and dives to closed. Top half and head relatively quiet throughout swing. Posted an 85 mph exit velocity and ran a 7.26 60-yard dash. Tracked the baseball well during game play, including making a diving catch running from center field to left-center.

Luke Zimmerman, 2018, 1B/LHP, Marple Newtown
5-foot-11, 200-pound left-handed hitter. Starts from an open stance and strides to slightly open. Repeated a pull-oriented swing during a solid round of BP and recorded an 86 mph exit velocity. Kept head and eyes relatively still throughout. Defensively, he showcased a soft glovehand and an accurate 70 mph arm with quick, one-shuffle release on double play feeds. Also looked very comfortable picking throws out of the dirt during game action.

Compact delivery and stays on-line well to the plate. Timing disruptions for the hitter include a start-and-stop takeaway and slight bounce out of his balance point. Out of a high three-quarter slot, he threw strikes with a fastball that sat 73-76 and two distinct breaking balls. Very good feel for a slow 1/7 curveball at 63-64 that he was routinely able to backdoor against right-handed hitters, while he also featured a tighter slider with more horizontal action at 66-67.

Chase Zurawski, 2017, C/RHP, Wilson
6-foot-2, 190-pound right-handed hitter. Starts from an open, upright stance with high hands. Good balance with controlled swing in BP, staying inside the ball with some slice to the opposite field. Limited use of lower half in game action didn't allow him to tap into the power potential that his 89 mph exit velocity portends. Ran a solid 7.25 60-yard dash for the position. Still raw as a blocker, he nonetheless showed agility behind the plate. Arm has very good carry and he logged workout pop times of 2.01-2.07 with an in-game 2.06.

Short arm action (not overly surprising for a catcher) into a high three-quarter slot. Good arm speed helped generate a fastball at 82-84, while slider at 73-75 has a chance to develop (although it backed up on him a bunch on this day). Still, not too shabby for a guy who was toeing the rubber for the first time since sixth grade.
