Of the 68 prospects in attendance just two were from the class of 2017. One of those, SS/RHP Matt Gorman walked away with the honor of being named the top overall prospect at the event. The The 5-foot-11, 160-pound two-way prospect impressed as a quality defensive middle infielder and hitter, but was equally as impressive on the mound.
Gorman starts with an overhead rocker out of the wind-up and throws from a three-quarter slot. His quick arm generated a lively fastball at 84-85 and two solid secondary offerings - a biting curveball at 69-70 that he commanded well and a change-up at 77-78 for which he has a solid feel. Gorman also possesses solid bloodlines, as his older brother Joey is a sophomore southpaw at Saint Joseph's University.
Fellow freshman, OF/RHP Jordan Art (Lakeland HS), showed promise as a two-way prospect. Art sat 67-69 from a high 3/4 arm slot and pounded the strike zone. The 5-foot-10, 140-pound righty also showcased an 11/5 breaking curveball at 63 mph and a 65 mph changeup at near fastball arm speed. Art has sound, repeatable mechanics and should see spikes in velocity as his frame matures.
