Coatesville Area 6, West Chester East 1

In a battle between two of the top teams in the Ches-Mont National Division standings, it was the second place Red Raiders grabbing a road victory over the fourth place Vikings. Based on recent power rankings, Coatesville appears safely in the 26-team District I 4A tournament field and is pushing for one of the six first-round byes, while WC East remains squarely in the mix for a post-season berth as well.

Adam SmithTowering Coatesville 6-foot-5, 230-pound junior right-handed pitcher Adam Stauffer (6 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 10 K) faced the minimum number of hitters in three of his first four innings, with the exception being when he recorded back-to-back strikeouts to strand runners at second and third in the bottom of the second. West Chester East sophomore right-handed pitcher Adam Smith (right) kept his team in the game early before the Red Raiders were able to create some distance against the Vikings bullpen.

Cole ChesnetCoatesville opened the scoring in the top of the first on a two-out, RBI double from senior designated hitter Stephon Hines, and tacked on another in the third on a run-scoring single from junior outfielder Nathan Valenta. When Smith departed with two runners on base in the sixth, Coatesville greeted WC East's reliever with run-scoring hits by Mount St. Mary's-bound outfielder Jared Urban and sophomore catcher Cole Chesnet (left) before the final run of the inning came across on a wild pitch. The Vikings scored an unearned run off Stauffer in the bottom of the sixth, but a flyout with two runners on ended the threat.
