Tim BrennanIn a battle between the 2nd-ranked teams in their respective PIAA classes (HGP in 3A, NH-S in 2A), the Firebirds emerged victorious and, in the process, clinched the Bicentennial Athletic League Independence Division championship.

Making his first start of the year, Saint Joseph's commit Tim Brennan (CG, 2 BB, 8 K - top right) outdueled Holy Cross commit Spencer Tinkel (5.2 IP, 1 BB, 0 K). Brennan allowed four baserunners in the bottom of the first inning, as NH-S answered the run HGP tallied in the top half, and then permitted only four Lions to reach base the remainder of the game. The turning point for the lanky right-hander Ryan Malloyappeared to be when he began to feature his quality 2-seam fastball more, repeatedly running it under the fists of NH-S's all right-handed line-up, after attempting to establish his secondary stuff early on. Brennan retired eight of the final nine hitters he faced, five via strikeout.

HGP took the lead for good in the fifth on an RBI triple from 2014 3B Joe Wnuk and a run-scoring double from 2015 SS Ryan Malloy (bottom right), both of which fell just out of the reach of diving outfielders. The Firebirds extended the lead in the next frame, scoring two more runs, capped by an RBI single from 2016 IF Nolan Jones.
