Game Recap: Malvern Prep at La Salle

It wasn't looking like the best of days for La Salle, having dropped a 5-4 decision to The Haverford School earlier in the afternoon and finding themselves down 3-0 to Malvern Prep through four and a half innings. But the Explorers' bats came alive and they were able to take advantage of a few miscues by the Friars to escape the non-conference match-up between defending state champs with a 4-3 victory.

Malvern Prep LHP Brendan Inglis, a Lehigh commit, retired the first eleven hitters he faced, changing speeds and keeping the La Salle hitters off balance. His offense was able to scratch across a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth, with the Explorers making a couple errors of their own.

Back-to-back doubles by sophomore outfielder Gregg Sywulak and senior second baseman Pat Meenan were part of a two-run La Salle rally in the bottom of the fifth. Meenan then chased Inglis from the game in the bottom of the next frame with his second RBI of the game.

A.J. GrezeszakWith the score tied headed to the bottom of the seventh, Explorers senior shortstop A.J. Grezeszak (right) reached to lead off the inning on a dropped fly ball. Duke-bound outfielder Jimmy Herron was then hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Junior designated hitter Andrew Ciarlone smoked a ball off the chest of the first baseman that ricocheted into foul territory, but Grezeszak was cut down at the plate trying to score from second base. A wild pitch advance Herron to third base, from where he used his speed to simply outrun a play at the plate on a groundball hit to the first baseman with the infield in, scoring the winning run.

Malvern Prep will try to get back on the horse Tuesday against fellow Inter-Ac contender Penn Charter. La Salle will be back in action on Wednesday in a Philadelphia Catholic League match-up against Lansdale Catholic.
