Game Recap: Malvern Prep at The Haverford School

By Jacob Gill
Pennsylvania Assistant Director of Scouting

Malvern Prep 9, The Haverford School 4

Shane MuntzTop-ranked junior Shane Muntz emphatically bookended the Malvern Prep line score while also flashing significant upside on the mound that has situated him as one of the most highly sought-after prospects in the state. The 6-foot-4, 240-pound right-handed hitter smoked a 3-run home run in the top of the first inning and then poked an opposite field grand slam in the seventh that effectively put a tight game out of reach in the Inter-Academic League opener for both schools.

Jimmy KingsburyJunior shortstop Matt Daller followed Muntz's first inning blast with one of his own to push the lead to four before Muntz stepped on the mound. Mixing his lively fastball and biting curveball, Muntz struck out four of the first six hitters he faced before allowing a run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 2nd. Senior designated hitter Cam Williams' solo home extended the lead back to four in the ensuing stanza. A bout of wildness ended Muntz's day (2.2 IP, 1 H, 2 BB, 4 HBP, 5 K) in the third inning, but junior Villanova commit Jimmy Kingsbury (left) came on to strand the bases loaded with a three-pitch strikeout.

The star of the day for the Fords was senior RHP Cameron Miller, who came out of the bullpen in the top of the fourth and shut down the Friars over the next three frames to give his offense a chance to get back in the game. That they did, as an RBI single from junior shortstop David Hogarth was following by a booming two-run home run off the bat of junior first baseman Bryan Hyland that pulled the home team within one at the end of four ininngs.

The bullpen for Malvern Prep would hold the fort from there, however, as Kingsbury (2.1 IP, H, BB, 3 K) and sophomore Pittsburgh commit Billy Corcoran (2 IP, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 K) retired eight of the final nine Fords hitters to secure the win.
