Game Recap: Pope John Paul II at Radnor

By Jacob Gill
Philadelphia Region Director of Scouting

Playing their bunt-and-run game to perfection, the Radnor Red Raiders scored single runs in the first, second, third, and fifth innings, and then escaped a bases loaded jam in the top of the seventh to eliminate defending class AAA state champ Pope John Paul II by a score of 4-1 in District I opening round action.

Connor WilsonFleet-of-foot junior outfielder Connor Wilson (right) led off the bottom of the first inning with a hard single to left, promptly stole second, advanced to third on a groundout, and scored when the Golden Panthers were unable to corral a pop-up down the right field line. The Red Raiders continued to execute throughout the game, scoring their remaining runs on two squeeze bunts and a first-and-third double steal.

Radnor senior right-handed pitcher Sean Corelli retired the first eight hitters he faced before a bad hop over the third baseman's head started a string of four consecutive hits in the bottom of the third that plated PJP's only run of the day. From there, Corelli didn't face more than four hitters in an inning until the seventh, when the Golden Panthers loaded the bases with two out. Sophomore right-handed pitcher Charlie Connolly was summoned from the bullpen and wasted little time putting the game in the books with a four-pitch strikeout.

Radnor advances to the District I class AAA semifinals tomorrow at 4:00pm against Sun Valley.
