Game Recap: Upper Dublin at Wissahickon

Wissahickon 10, Upper Dublin 0 (6 inn)

Ryan BeckerUpper Dublin found themselves behind the proverbial eight-ball before the game even began, as scheduled starting pitcher Dan Jacobson (Rhode Island) was scratched due to lower back tightness that flared up during warm-ups.  Given the way Wissahickon 2017 RHP Logan Willans pitched, however, it might not have mattered. Willans filled up the zone all day long, throwing 72% strikes (including 17 of 22 first pitches) and only going to two 3-ball counts (none after the first inning).

The Trojans struck for two runs in the bottom of the first, giving Willans an early lead with which to work.  2016 3B Blake Rapoport singled, stole second, Nick Falsoand scored on a base hit by 2017 DH Alexander Tappen, who came around to score on an error later in the inning. The floodgates opened in a six-run bottom of the second inning, highlighted by a bases loaded double from 2015 2B Ryan Becker (top right) and a run-scoring triple from 2015 SS Nick Falso (Ohio U, bottom right).

The Cardinals best scoring opportunity came in the top of the fourth inning, which began with the first two hitters reaching base. 2014 3B Dane Nealis, who hit the ball hard all game, smoked a bullet one-hopper back up the middle. Unfortunately for the visitors, the Trojans feature one of the top double-play combos in the area, and they turned a beautiful 4-6-3 DP on a backhand stab from Becker and underhand flip to Falso. After that, it was all Willans, who finished with a final line of 6 IP, 3 H, 0 BB, 6 K.

2015 SS Christian Huckfeldt (2-3) led Upper Dublin offensively. Wissahickon saw Rapoport (1-2, 3 R, SB), Tappen (2-3, 2 R, 2B, 3 RBI), Falso (2-3, 3B, RBI), and 2014 OF Lee Dugger (2-3, SB) each reach base three times.
