Game Recap: Warwick at Ephrata

Warwick 4, ephrata 1

Over the course of the nearly two decades that Adrian Shelley has been the head coach at Ephrata high school his Mounts teams have become known for playing fundamentally sound baseball. On Monday night it was the Warwick Warriors that made all the plays and did all the little things that resulted in a 4-1 win over their Lancaster-Lebanon League rivals.

Warwick plated four runs in the middle innings and junior right-hander Zach Peters made those runs stand up thanks to some outstanding defense and questionable base running by the Mounts. Peters finished his complete game effort the way he began the evening, with a strikeout. He faced the minimum through three innings and held a potent Ephrata lineup to just one run on four hits while striking out four.

Ephrata was thrown out at the plate on three occasions on the evening and caught stealing once. The Mounts also committed three errors. Senior righty Dillon Good went the distance, pitching out of a number of jams, and kept his team withing striking distance all night. The Nyack commit struck out four and allowed three earned runs.

Tyler Martin (2-3, BB, R, RBI), Justin Smith (2-4, RBI) and Justin Byler (3-4) fueled the Warriors 10 hit attack.

Ephrata appeared to be in good shape to cut into Warwick's early four run lead when senior shortstop Nate Fassnacht, a George Washington recruit, led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a walk. Chase Weik followed with a single and Justin Carvell laid down a bunt single to move both runners up. Fassnacht scored and Ephrata had the tying runs at second and third with nobody out when Peters' throw to first base was errant. Following a shallow fly out to left field for the first out Weik attempted to score run number two of the inning when Patrick Gallagher flied out to right field. Warwick right fielder Thomas Elliott, a Penn State Harrisburg commit, made a perfect throw to the plate that resulted in Weik being caught in a rundown for the final out of the inning.

Threats by the Mounts in the 5th and 6th innings were also derailed when runners were cut down at the plate. Warwick moved to 9-1 with the win. Ephrata fell to 8-2 overall.
