Landis Establishes Himself as an Elite Catcher

By Greg Williams
PA Director of Scouting

Landis2Drew Landis is a 5-foot-10, 185-pound C/3B who established himself as one of the top catchers in the PA Class of 2014 at the Preseason All-State Showcase in February. His arm was not the strongest at the event at 74 mph out of the crouch, but his clean transfer and quick feet allowed Landis to turn in two sub 1.90 pop times at 1.88 and 1.89. Landis has an exceptionally quick transfer and gains ground effectively. Offensively he had one of the better batting practice rounds of the day. Landis used a short, compact line-drive stroke to consistently square baseballs throughout his round. He wore out the middle and opposite sides of the field while staying inside the baseball. While his swing mechanics will not produce big power numbers, it will allow him to be consistent and to hit for average.

Landis is coming off a sophomore season that saw him bat .326 with a .453 on base percentage. He is clearly destined to be a catcher at the next level but also showed the ability to play some corner infield. He showed a capable glove at third base and throws that had good carry across the diamond at 82 mph. Landis' performance elevated him to the No. 15 spot in the PA Class of 2014.
