Pennsylvania's Five Most Promising Second Basemen

By Greg Williams
PA Director of Scouting

The qualities that indicate a prospect has the makings of a quality second baseman at the next level vary depending on who you ask. Some coaches will tell you that they are looking for shortstops that hit well but lack a plus arm to slide to the other side of the infield in college. With the institution of the BBCOR bat rules other coaches prioritize a standout defender who can turn the double play. Today's "12 Days of Christmas" article focuses on the most promising second basemen in Pennsylvania.

  1. GantzCory Gantz, Class of 2013, Hempfield HS

Gantz is a 6-foot, 170-pound UNC-Wilmington recruit who has good hands and an 85 mph arm across the infield. The left-handed hitter is also a quality pitcher who sits in the mid-80's with a solid slider and changeup. He has been recruited to pitch for the Seahawks, but may have the opportunity to be a two-way player. Gantz is ranked No. 40 in the PA Class of 2013.
