Preseason All-State Corner Infield Analysis (Class of 2015)

Ben DumThe number of corner infielders in the Class of 2015 was small but very talented. All three prospects in this class showed the potential to be highly recruited players and definitely held their own with prospects from the Class of 2013 and 2014. Following is the breakdown of the sophomore corner infield prospects in attendance.

1. Ben Dum, RHP/3B, West Perry HS

Dum is a 6-foot, 175-pound prospect with an athletic build and a lot of potential. The sophomore two-way player showed smooth actions in the infield with soft hands and a quick release. Dum showcased good carry on throws of 78 mph across the diamond with much more arm strength to spare. He displayed good feet as evidenced by his 4.20 home-to-first time. The left-handed hitter hits out of a square stance with a very short stride. He barreled the baseball consistently with an 82 mph bat exit velocity.

2. Zach Smiley, 3B, Spring-Ford HS

Smiley is a talented left-handed hitting sophomore with a very short swing path and a solid 5-foot-10, 200-pound frame. He hits out of an open stance and uses an explosive lower half with quick hands to create barrel whip and an 81 mph bat exit velocity. Smiley had an excellent round of batting practice in which he consistently barreled the baseball using all fields. Defensively Smiley showcased a 79 mph arm across the infield and the ability to play through the baseball.

3. Sam Lazowski, RHP/1B, Donegal HS

Lazowski has projectable size at 6-foot-4, 205-pounds. He showed adequate glove work and a 77 mph arm across the infield. The left-handed hitting sophomore used a square stance and a toe tap launch to produce a bat exit velocity of 88 mph. As he continues to mature into his body Lazowski could develop some significant power potential in a swing that consistently gets to the hitting zone on time.
