Preseason All-State Showcase Analysis: Committed Seniors

By Greg Williams
PA Director of Scouting

Of the 109 prospects in attendance at the Preseason All-State Showcase on February 23, only eight were from the Class of 2013. Today we will take a look at the performances of the three committed seniors in attendance. All three turned in solid outings and appear ready to go for their final high school season.

GoodlingBrian Goodling, RHP, Carlisle HS
Goodling is a 5-foot-10, 180-pound VCU recruit who signed in November of 2012. Goodling didn't waste any time showing what made him a coveted prospect in this class. Throwing out of a high 3/4 arm slot, he pounded the strike zone during one of the better bullpen sessions of the day. Goodling's fastball sat 86-87 with late life and it was evident that there is more in the tank if needed. He commanded an 11/5 breaking curveball that has tight rotation at 75 mph. Equally as impressive was Goodling's changeup that he throws at fastball arm speed. The pitch sits 75-76 with good arm side run. It is easy to see how Goodling has been named his high school team's MVP the past two years. The future VCU Ram looks primed for a third consecutive MVP caliber season.

Mike Owens, RHP, Pope John Paul II HS
Owens is a 5-foot-11, 170-pound prospect who was nearly as impressive as Goodling. While he did not have the velocity that Goodling had, he certainly matched him in command and quality of secondary pitches. Owens sat 83-85 out of a high 3/4 arm slot with late arm side run to his fastball. His arm action is clean and his mechanics are very repeatable. Owens also commanded a solid 72 mph slider and a 73 mph changeup that is possibly his top pitch. The changeup has heavy arm side run and also show some late downward action. Owens made a verbal commitment to attend Roanoke College in Virginia in January.

Richard PerryRichard Perry, RHP/OF, Northwestern Lehigh HS
Perry is a 6-foot-4, 185-pound prospect who recently signed with Lehigh Carbon Community College. Perry showcased and 82 mph arm from the outfield and athletic actions to the ball. He showed an 85 mph bat exit velocity and good barrel whip during a round of batting practice that saw him routinely square baseballs to all fields. Perry completed his day with a solid bullpen session. He sat 78-80 out of a high 3/4 arm slot with some arm side run. Perry also commanded a 74 mph changeup and a 67 mph curveball with an 11/5 break.
