Prior to embarking on their sophomore and freshmen seasons, 10 middle infielders descended on Keystone State Baseball Academy in Manheim to showcase their skills at the Preseason All-State Showcase. They are listed below in reverse alphabetical order. Why? See Philadelphia Region Director of Scouting Jake Gill's article today on Class of 2016 corner infielders in attendance for the answer.

Ryan UngureanRyan Ungurean, 1B/3B, Lansdale Catholic HS (PA), Class of 2017
Ungurean ran a 7.90 60-yard dash and showed capable actions around the bag at first base with an accurate 69 mph arm across the diamond. The 5-foot-10, 180-pound right-handed hitter starts from a slightly open stance with a high hands load. Ungurean incorporates a toe tap stride and a flat barrel path with some barrel drag to his swing. As Ungurean progresses a concentration on utilizing his lower half more fully should provide for an improvement on his 77 mph bat exit velocity and the ability to turn on balls on the inner half.

Shane SouchuckShane Souchuck, RHP/3B, Conwell-Egan HS (PA), Class of 2017
Souchuck is a 6-foot, 210-pound right-handed hitter that starts from a square stance. He utilizes a leg lift stride and a strong lower half to produce some pop in his bat with an exit velocity of 87 mph. The sophomore has a tendency to not get fully rotated preventing him from getting to full extension, but produces significant barrel whip and has a feel for the barrel. Souchuck ran a 7.38 60-yard dash and showcased average arm strength (76 mph) across the diamond from third base. Although a primary pitcher, his offensive power potential will likely draw some interest moving forward.

Charlie VarrianoCharlie Varriano, 3B/OF, Hempfield Area HS (PA), Class of 2017
Varriano continued to impress with loose hands and advanced barrel whip (93 mph bat exit velocity). The right-handed hitter starts from a slightly open stance with a high hands load. Varriano uses no stride and clears his hips well allowing his hands to work freely. He has shown steady progress defensively showcasing solid footwork and an 81 mph arm across the diamond on this date. The sophomore moves very well (6.84 60-yard dash) and could easily make the move to a corner outfield spot at some point in the future.
