PA Director of Scouting
Prior to embarking on their sophomore and freshmen seasons, 10 middle infielders descended on Keystone State Baseball Academy in Manheim to showcase their skills at the Preseason All-State Showcase. They are listed below in reverse alphabetical order. Why? See Philadelphia Region Director of Scouting Jake Gill's article today on Class of 2016 right-handed pitchers in attendance for the answer.
Trent Vietmeier, RHP/3B, Montour HS (PA), Class of 2017
See notes from Wednesday's top prospects article.
Shane Souchuck, RHP/3B, Conwell-Egan HS (PA), Class of 2017
Souchuck is a physical 6-foot, 210-pound righty that sat 77-78 from and over the top arm slot with some hip coil to his delivery. The sophomore commanded his 74 mph changeup thrown at near fastball arm speed and a 63 mph curveball that has the potential to get a lot of outs. Souchuck gets 12/6 rotation out of his arm slot leading to hard down action at the plate. If he can develop the ability to throw the pitch with greater velocity he will have a solid second pitch to go along with a fastball that should see velocity spikes as well.
Adam Schwartz, RHP/3B, Ephrata HS (PA), Class of 2017
See notes from Wednesday's top prospects article.
Spencer Perez, RHP/1B, Eastern Regional HS (NJ), Class of 2017
Perez is a 5-foot-10, 180-pound righty that initiates his delivery with a short side rocker step, sitting 76-77 out of a high 3/4 arm slot with arm side run to his fastball. The sophomore gets out over his front leg well and has a quick arm which should lead to velocity gains moving forward. Perez also pounded the strike zone with his 66 mph curveball that showed 11/5 rotation. His 70 mph changeup is thrown at fastball arm speed and displayed some arm side run.
Jackson Pauwels, 2B/RHP, Episcopal Academy (PA), Class of 2017
Pauwels sat 72-75 out of a high 3/4 arm slot with a balanced, compact delivery. The 5-foot-10, 170-pound sophomore pounded the strike zone and appeared to have much more in the tank. Pauwels also showcased a 71 mph changeup thrown at similar arm speed with some arm side run and a a 68 mph curveball with 11/5 rotation. The breaking ball, Pauwels signature pitch, showed late break with down action capable of getting plenty of outs.
Mike Ottomano, RHP/OF, Lansdale Catholic HS, Class of 2017
Ottomano won't wow anyone with his present velocity, but his 6-foot-3, 165-pound frame and 3/4 arm slot makes him an interesting follow. The sophomore sat 68-70 with some arm side run to his fastball with the potential for significant velocity gains with mechanical improvements and added physical maturation. Ottomano also showcased a 62 mph curveball with 11/5 rotation and a 65 mph changeup that showed run with arm speed similar to that of his fastball. The righty has long levers and appears to be just beginning to get a feel for his frame.
Santino Nave', RHP/2B, Roman Catholic HS, Class of 2017
Nave' impressed with repeatable mechanics, three quality pitches and his ability to throw strikes. The 5-foot-9, 155-pound sophomore sat 78-80 out of a 3/4 arm slot with a loose, quick arm and some hip coil to his delivery. Nave' also commanded his 67 mph curveball that showed 11/5 rotation and a 73 mph changeup thrown at fastball arm speed with some arm side run and sink. As he moves forward a move from curveball to slider may make sense with his arm slot and ability to hide the baseball from hitters.
Ryan McSorley, 3B/RHP, Lansdale Catholic (PA), Class of 2017
McSorley completed a solid two day performance as a two-way prospect by sitting 77-79 out of a 3/4 arm slot with some run to his fastball. The sophomore held velocity well out of the stretch and showcased sound, repeatable mechanics to his delivery. McSorley flashed a 67 mph curveball with tight 11/5 rotation when he stay on top of it and an above average 75 mph changeup with significant run thrown at fastball arm speed.
Will Lozinak, RHP/3B, Bishop Guilfoyle (PA), Class of 2017
Lozinak has a very projectable 6-foot-4, 200-pound frame and a solid feel for four pitches. The sophomore sat 82-84 out of a 3/4 arm slot with a long, loose arm action that produces significant arm side run to his fastball. Lozinak displayed good tempo and balance to his delivery and gets over his front side well leading to good tilt to his deliveries. The righty mixed an 82 mph two-seam fastball, an above average 71 mph curveball with 11/5 rotation and a 75 mph changeup thrown at fastball arm speed with arm side run.
Ian Kacergis, 1B/RHP, Pennridge (PA), Class of 2017
Kacergis sat 78-80 out of a 3/4 arm slot with a very deliberate, repeatable delivery. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound sophomore has an easy arm action and projectable frame that should lead to additional velocity in coming years. Kacergis also showcased a 69 mph slider and a 75 mph changeup with arm side run that was delivered at near fastball arm speed. The solidly built righty will be an interesting follow in this class and could very well compete for varsity innings on a deep Pennridge staff.
Jordan Fiedor, OF/RHP, Hempfield Area (PA), Class of 2017
See notes from Wednesday's top prospects article.
Alec Andrews, RHP/1B, Friends' Central, Class of 2017
Every event leads to at least a handful of prospects that were under the radar making a big impression and this event was no different. Of those to make some noise Andrews may be at the head of the class. The 6-foot-1, 175-pound righty sat 82-84 with a high knee, hip coil delivery that led to arm side run on his fastball. Andrews has a loose, quick arm and an athletic frame that should continue to fill out. The sophomore also displayed a two-seam fastball at 82 mph, a 72 mph slider a a 75 mph changeup that were all thrown routinely for strikes.
