Q&A With University of Virginia Commit Max Kranick

By Greg Williams
PA Director of Scouting

Max KranickRHP Max Kranick is a 6-foot-2, 160-pound prospect that has vaulted up the PA Class of 2016 rankings to sit at his current position of No. 4 in the class. He has a long, lean frame that should fill out significantly in the coming years. Kranick currently sits 85-87 with much more in the tank.

The Valley View HS sophomore can work on getting bigger and stronger over his final three years of high school without concern for what the future holds. Kranick announced his verbal commitment to play his college baseball at the University of Virginia this week.

He joins No. 1 ranked 1B/LHP Alex Kirilloff (Plum HS, Liberty University) and No. 3 ranked C/RHP Jake Jessell (Woodland Hills HS, Pitt) as the only prospects in the class from Pennsylvania to have announced their commitments.

Kranick discussed his choice decision and the process that led to his decision with Prep Baseball Report.

PBR:  Congratulations on announcing your verbal commitment to Virginia. What led you to choose Virginia?

Kranick: I was really impressed with everything that UVA had to offer. UVA has an outstanding academic reputation as well as some of the best baseball facilities college baseball has to offer.

PBR:  What other schools were you considering?

Kranick: I was also considering Boston College, St. Johns, North Carolina, Miami, Vanderbilt, Stony Brook and Wake Forest.

PBR:  Was distance from home a factor in your decision?

Kranick: It was an important factor but not necessarily the most important factor.  Of course I would like my family to be able to come to my games as often as possible.

PBR:  Where did the coaches first see you?  How did your relationship develop with their coaching staff?

Kranick: The coaches first saw me at a tournament held at UVA this past summer.  I would call Coach Kuhn weekly to let him know how I was progressing and to update him on my tournament schedule.

PBR:  What is your biggest strength as a player and how do you feel that will help your team?

Kranick: I am a very competitive player. I believe that I have a good feel for the game which helps me in my pitching approach.

PBR:  Who do you play for in the summer and what was your most memorable experience from this past summer?

Kranick: I played my summer ball for Baseball U. My most memorable experience was playing with Baseball U at the WWBA 16U National Championship held in Marietta Georgia.

PBR:  What kind of goals do you have over the next three years of your high school career?

Kranick: I want to continue to develop as a pitcher and position player as well. I would like for our high school to win a district championship. My high school (Valley View) lost in the district championship game last year.
