Q&A With VCU Commit Mitchel Lacey

By Greg Williams
PA Director of Scouting

Mitchel LaceyMitchel Lacey is heading to VCU one year after his Cumberland Valley HS teammate Matt Davis did the same. Cumberland Valley is becoming a breeding ground for college baseball players with a total of seven players moving on to the college ranks in the past two years, five of those commitments coming from the Class of 2014.

Lacey is a 6-foot-2, 170-pound prospect that showcased athletic actions at the Preseason All-State Showcase in February. He displayed a 78 mph arm across the diamond and some gap power potential at the plate with an above average 88 mph bat exit velocity. Lacey is a primary 3B, but has the ability to play a number of positions on the diamond. He hit .375 as a junior in 2013 while going 1-2 with a 2.23 ERA on the mound.

Prep Baseball Report spoke to Lacey about his college choice and the process that led to his ultimate decision.

PBR:  Where have you decided to attend college and why did you make this choice?

Lacey: Virginia Commonwealth University. It was the best choice for me academically and athletically.

PBR:  What other schools were you considering?

Lacey: I was also considering Shippensburg University, Mount St. Mary’s University, and the University at Albany.

PBR:  Was distance from home a factor in your decision?

Lacey: I always wanted to play ball in the south, but location was not a major deciding factor in my decision.

PBR:  Where did the coaches first see you?  How did your relationship develop with their coaching staff?

Lacey: The coaches first saw me at our regional American Legion tournament. After the tournament I stayed in touch with them throughout the process up until making my decision.

PBR:  What role do the coaches expect you to play your first year on campus?

Lacey: The coaches expect me to contribute at third base.

PBR:  What is your biggest strength as a player and how do you feel that will help your team?

Lacey: My biggest strength is driving in runs. I feel it will help my team because you can never have too much run support especially at the collegiate level.

PBR:  Who do you play for in the summer and what was your most memorable experience from this past summer?

Lacey: I play for Hampden Travel. The whole summer was a very memorable summer. I have been playing with the same guys since I was 11 and it was really exciting to have one last go at things and have some fun doing it.

PBR:  What is your current GPA?

Lacey: My current GPA is 3.8.

PBR:  Now that you have your commitment out of the way, what are your goals both individually and for the team going into your senior season?

Lacey: I would like to continue to sharpen up my skills and technique. Most importantly is to help take my high school team (Cumberland Valley) to a district and hopefully a state championship game.

PBR: How did Prep Baseball Report aid you in gaining exposure as a potential college baseball recruit?

Lacey: Prep baseball prepared me for a pro style workout and criticism of what I need to work on which helped me further prepare for other events in which these schools saw me.
