District 10 Class a championship: Western Beaver vs. OLSH
In a match-up of two teams ranked No. 2 and No. 4 respectively in the PBR 1A state rankings, Western Beaver pulled off the upset to take home the WPIAL Class A title 3-2.
OLSH plated single runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings and appeared to be in full control behind RHP Preston Falascino, a Slippery Rock recruit. 2014 catcher Steve Menich laced a triple to left center field for Western Beaver in the bottom of the 4th inning and scored on an OLSH error.
Robert DiMaggio led off the bottom of the 6th inning with a single and Menich followed with his second hit of the game. DiMaggio was able to circle the bases when the ball was misplayed in the outfield. Following a sacrifice bunt that moved Menich to third, CF Steve Robison grounded out to short to drive in what turned out to be the winning run.
Western Beaver 2014 RHP Nick Miller went the distance, scattering six hits for the win. Falascino was the hard-luck loser, going six innings and allowing just four hits, while striking out seven.
District 10 Class aaAA championship: Seneca valley vs. north allegheny
In a match-up of two teams ranked No. 4 and No. 6 respectively in the PBR 4A state rankings, North Allegheny took home the WPIAL title 4-2 Wednesday night at Consol Energy Park.
2014 RHP Mitch Machi went 6.1 innings to pick up the win and 2014 RHP Jason Monper came on to strike out the final two Raiders hitters of the evening to pick up the save.
North Allegheny used an unorthodox rally to plate two runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning after Seneca Valley took a brief 1-0 lead in the top half of the inning. The Tigers used back-to-back two out singles, a walk and a balk to take a 2-1 lead.
SS Brandon Bergstrom (2-for-3, 2B, run scored) led off the 5th inning with a double. Three straight sacrifice bunts, one of which was handled cleanly for an out, led to two more Tigers runs and a 4-1 lead that they would not relinquish.
Both teams advance to the PIAA state tournament beginning on June 3.
