Super 60 Spotlight: '23 RHP Luke Guth

Ted Williams
VP Scouting/Content

A metrics darling from the Super 60, Guth showed he didn't need his best velocity to compete on the big stage. Still green physically at 6-foot-2, 170lbs, the wiry righty hammered the zone with a 4.6 foot average release height, which gave his high-spin heater "invisiball" traits at times when thrown above the belt. The Vanderbilt signee drew rave reviews on his ability to spin, leading the entire event in AVG FB spin (2559), as well as placing 2nd in peak breaking ball spin (3088rpms).

More impressively, Guth has been working on improving the CH, which displayed hard fade to the arm-side of the plate and one of its better looks feel wise (18 inch HM). A 5-6 mph deficit off of the FB should allow for swing/miss when located for strikes.

Considering his natural compete level in-game and manipulation of the FB to either side of the plate (run and cut), it comes as no surprise that the Franklin native was the state strikeout leader in 2022.

Some notes from our national scouts in attendance: "RHP Luke Guth (Franklin Area, PA; Vanderbilt) intrigued on the mound, even if he wasn’t among the fastball velo leaders. Sitting mostly 89-90 mph, Guth showcased all kinds of alluring metrics with his fastball, most obviously its spin, as it ripped through the zone at an average of 2,559 rpm. His low average release height (4.6 feet), quick arm speed, and lean 6-foot-2 physique are each reasons he remains a close follow this spring."

Super 60 report

2/05/23

Physical: Lean, wiry athletic 6-foot-2, 170-pound frame with competitive fire and feel to pitch.

Pitching: RHP. Starts slightly offset from the far left corner of the rubber; above-average pace in the delivery down the slope with repeatable parts and an ultra-fast arm. Shorter, medium H 3/4 slot that throws out of a lower release height (4.6), adding some life to an 89-90 mph FB at 2550+ AVG rpms. Mixed two-plane breaker in the upper-70's, above 3000+ numerous times, and faded a mid-80s CH to arm-side.
