Tournament Of Stars: Evaluation Day 1 Notebook

By Nathan Rode

USA Baseball’s Tournament of Stars takes place this week in Cary, NC, at the National Training Complex and the prestigious event has a slightly different look to it this year. The field of teams has been reduced to six and there are two evaluation days now—one on the front end meant to be a pro style workout and another in the middle that is geared more toward national team drills and assessments. Games begin Wednesday, but here are a few quick thoughts from the first evaluation day…

+ IF Xavier Legrant (O’Berry Academy of Tech, NC) showed a loose, quick swing…I had only seen Austin Bergner (West Orange HS, FL) on the mound, where he was 88-91 in the fall, but that arm strength was obvious in the infield. He moves well and the ball comes out of his hand easily…IF Ke’Bryan Hayes (Concordia Lutheran HS, TX) showed solid feet and arm strength and hits with low hands, but he really gets them through the zone and the ball can jump off his bat…IF Logan Tolbert (IMG Academy, FL) has a strong arm and displayed an ability to go to the middle and away well.
