As we head down the home stretch of this weather-condensed season that has many leagues gearing up for conference tournaments, below is our second in-season update of our PIAA Class A Super 16 (i.e. the teams we believe are best positioned to reach the state tournament, if district tournaments started today). A couple of notes:
1. X-Y under "Berth" = [District]-[Bid]. For example, 3-2 is the runner-up from District III.
2. If any of this data is incorrect (specifically, team records), please let us know.
Berth | School | Record | Notes |
3-1 | Millersburg Area | 10-4 | Went 5-0 since last update. It's been a season of streaks for the Tri Valley Athletic Association East Division leading Indians, who sandwiched a 3-game losing skid between 4- and 6-game winning stretches (the latter of which is ongoing). |
12-1 | Masterman |
3-6 | Went 1-3 since last update. Ignore the overall record, as the Philadelphia Public League doesn't separate its divisions by class, so 11 of Masterman's league opponents are larger schools. Beat other 1A contender GAMP 9-4. |
2-1 | Lackawanna Trail |
8-2 | Went 5-1 since last update. The Lions won five games in five days before having their streak halted yesterday. Battle for the top of LIAA Division 4 with home-and-home series against Montrose this week. |
4-1 | North Penn- Mansfield |
6-4 | Went 3-1 since last update. Got retribution for 26-5 drubbing by Athens Area with 2-0 win and still hold trump card over Canton due to 9-6 win earlier in the spring. |
1-1 | Christopher Dock Mennonite | 10-2 | Went 5-1 since last update. Only two losses are to district 3A favorite Holy Ghost Prep and district 2A favorite Devon Prep. Have not allowed more than three runs to any opponent besides those two. |
11-1 | Pius X |
6-5 | Went 2-2 since last update. The Royals continue to barely hold onto this spot (as an independent, they must finish above .500 to make district tourney). Marian Catholic is 14-1, with only blemish a 12-2 loss to Pius X. |
5-1 | Meyersdale Area | 16-1 | Went 4-1 since last update. Unexpected hiccup against Shanksville Stonycreek, but the Red Raiders are still the top dog. Have only allowed more than two runs three times all season. |
3-2 | Lancaster County Christian |
10-4 | Went 5-2 since last update. The Lions have held ten opponents to one or zero runs and sit atop the Commonwealth Christian Athletic Conference. |
7-1 | Greensburg Central Catholic | 14-1 | Went 4-0 since last update. Completed series sweep of strong Serra Catholic club and clinched the WPIAL Section 2 crown. Have held ten opponents to two or less runs. |
6-2 | Portage Area | 13-2 | Went 6-1 since last update. Evened the season series with Ferndale Area and replaced the Yellow Jackets here by virtue of knocking off one of the district 2A favorites (Bishop McCort) earlier in the season. |
10-1 | Rocky Grove |
8-1 | Went 5-0 since last update. Outscored opponents 41-8 during that stretch. Currently sit atop District X Region 1. |
9-2 | DuBois Central Catholic | 8-1 | Went 5-1 since last update. Have scored double digits in all but two games. Only loss is 2-1 heartbreaker to district favorite Elk County Catholic. |
6-1 | Blairsville | 10-1 | Went 3-0 since last update. Only three opponents have scored more than one run against the Bobcats pitching staff, while only four have held their offense under double-digits. |
7-3 | California Area | 15-1 | Went 5-0 since last update. Trojans have held thirteen opponents to three or less runs and have scored at least eight runs in all but one contest on their way to emphatically capturing the WPIAL Section 1 title. |
9-1 | Elk County Catholic | 9-1 | Went 6-0 since last update. Crusaders have held seven opponents to three or less runs and have scored at least six runs all but once. Beat DuBois Central Catholic 2-1 to hold onto the top spot. |
7-2 | Vincentian Academy | 13-3 | Went 7-0 since last update. The Royals rolled to the WPIAL Section 4 crown and have only lost one game to an in-state opponent all season (to 4A Shaler Area). Have won twelve games by double digits. |
