WV Top Prospect Games Review: Middle Infield Analysis

The summer rush of PBR events in Pennsylvania and West Virginia came to a close with the inaugural WV Top Prospect Games on August 9 and 10. Prospects from four states assembled at the YMCA Kennedy Center Field in Huntington, WV for two days of nine inning games and showcase activities. Today we continue our analysis of the prospects in attendance by taking a look at the middle infielders that participated.

2015 2B/3B Joe Campagna (Blackhawk HS, PA)

Joe CampagnaCampagna went 1-for-5 with a double while barreling several other baseball for loud outs in the course of game action. The 5-foot-11, 190-pound right-handed hitter displayed the ability to drive the baseball to all fields during batting practice with a short, direct swing path and a strong lower half. Campagna registered an 83 mph bat exit velocity and ran a 7.47 60-yard dash. Defensively, Campagna displayed the ability to play through the baseball with an accurate 75 mph arm across the diamond. The uncommitted senior also flashed the ability to man a corner outfield position moving forward.

2016 SS/2B Michael Hill (Independence HS)

Michael HillHill earned MVP honors for the White Team following a 3-for-6 performance with a double at the plate in game action over two days. The 5-foot-10, 150-pound right-handed hitter displayed a short swing path from a square stance with a bat exit velocity of 78 mph. Hill displayed an above average skill set defensively with good feet, a fluid transfer and the ability to make plays on the move. The junior ran a 7.58 60-yard dash and flashed an 81 mph arm across the diamond.

2015 SS/3B Brady Lloyd (Mifflinburg Area HS, PA)

Brady LloydLloyd accomplished what no other player at the event did when he registered a sub-7.0 60-yard dash (6.89). The right-handed hitter went 3-for-6 in game action while swiping two bases. Lloyd has a quiet approach at the plate, starting from a slightly open stance while striding closed. He displayed the ability to stay inside the baseball during batting practice with a bat exit velocity of 83 mph. Lloyd flashed the top defensive actions among middle infield prospects. The uncommitted senior showed a soft glove hand, good feet and the ability to make plays on the move with a 76 mph arm across the diamond.

2015 2B/3B Bailey McGrath (Bridgeport HS, OH)

Bailey McGrathMcGrath went 4-for-6 in game action while barreling the baseball in all six trips to the plate. The physical 5-foot-8, 185-pound right-handed hitter squared the baseball routinely in batting practice as well from a high hands load with a bat exit velocity of 83 mph. McGrath showcased good rhythm to his swing and the ability to drive the baseball to both gaps. The uncommitted senior ran a 7.46 60-yard dash and displayed the ability to handle multiple infield positions capably with a 75 mph arm across the diamond.

2015 SS/2B Alex Slates (Morgantown HS)

Alex SlatesSlates made several sports center caliber plays defensively in game action during the course of the event. The 5-foot-8, 170-pound uncommitted senior displayed a quick release and a fluid transition with a 71 mph arm across the diamond. Slates displayed the ability to routinely square the baseball during batting practice from a slightly closed stance. The right-handed hitter used all fields and registered a bat exit velocity of 76 mph. Slates went 1-for-5 at the plate in game action over the course of the two day event.

2015 SS/RHP Tanner Stanz (Warren HS, PA)

Tanner StanzStanz is an uncommitted senior two-way prospect that showed well in all facets of the game. The 5-foot-10, 170-pound right-handed hitter barreled the baseball to all fields during batting practice from a slightly open stance with a toe tap stride. Stanz used a short swing path and good rhythm to create a bat exit velocity of 79 mph. He went 2-for-5 with a double in game action while being retired on line drive outs twice over two days. Stanz displayed the ability to make plays on the move while also using several arm angles to make throws across the diamond. The righty, who is bouncing back from some arm issues, sat 82-83 on the mound with command of a 73 mph curveball with 11/5 rotation and a solid 75 mph changeup. When at 100% Stanz' fastball usually sits in the 85-86 range.

2014 SS/OF Jordan Dieffenbach (Morgantown HS)

Dieffenbach is a 5-foot-10, 145-pound prospect who graduated in June a year ahead of his class. The right-handed hitter showcased quick hands from a slightly open stance during batting practice. Dieffenbach displayed the ability to use all fields with a bat exit velocity of 81 mph. He went on to go 1-for-5 in game action at the plate including a single to start action in the first game of the event. Dieffenbach showed a soft glove hand at shortstop, making several plays in game action, with a 69 mph arm across the diamond.

2016 2B/OF Jacob Fisher (Sissonville HS)

Fisher hits from a wide, square stance with limited lower half action to his swing. The right handed hitter barreled the baseball frequently in batting practice and went 1-for-5 in game action with a bat exit velocity of 76 mph. The 5-foot-7, 160-pound junior displayed an accurate 67 mph arm across the diamond and ran a 7.51 60-yard dash.

2B/SS Dustin Freeman (Morgantown HS)

The 5-foot-9, 155-pound junior displayed a quick release and the ability to play through the baseball during defensive evaluations. Freeman showcased the ability to make throws from several arm angles with an accurate 67 mph arm across the diamond. The right-handed hitter displayed the ability to barrel the baseball to all fields during batting practice from a square stance with no stride. Freeman went 4-for-8 in game action while registering a bat exit velocity of 75 mph.

2016 SS/RHP Drew Lett (Doddridge County HS)

Lett is a 6-foot-2, 160-pound two-way prospect that has a projectable frame. The junior displayed a 74 mph arm across the diamond and sat 79-81 on the mound from a high 3/4 arm slot with some arm side run to his fastball. Lett displayed a line drive approach from a square stance during batting practice and squared the baseball routinely to all fields. The right-handed hitter registered a 74 mph bat exit velocity and had several quality at bats in game action.

2016 2B/OF Branson Martin (Hurricane HS)

Martin is a 5-foot-10, 155-pound right-handed hitter that went 1-for-6 in game action while barreling the baseball routinely over the course of two games. The junior starts from a slightly open stance and uses a line drive approach to create a bat exit velocity of 77 mph. Martin showcased a 75 mph arm from the outfield and showed capable actions as a middle infielder during game play.

2017 2B/SS Ian Tolle (Minford HS, OH)

Tolle is a 6-foot, 125-pound sophomore that has a projectable frame and should continue to develop physically over the coming years. Tolle registered a 61 mph bat exit velocity hitting from a square stance with a line drive approach. The right-handed hitter displayed the ability to use all fields by squaring the baseball frequently in his round of batting practice. Tolle flashed developing skills in the middle infield with an accurate 70 mph arm across the diamond.
