Jeff Scholzen Named As Utah Scouting Director

PBR Staff

Prep Baseball Report is proud to welcome Jeff Scholzen as our Utah Scouting Director. A native of Utah with a long track record of success as a MLB professional scout and collegiate head coach, Scholzen’s baseball roots run thick and deep across the state.

A high-level talent evaluator with 20 years of professional scouting experience, Scholzen brings a wealth of knowledge and a passion for Utah baseball to the Prep Baseball Report.

“I couldn’t be more excited that Jeff Scholzen is on our team,” said Prep Baseball Report President Sean Duncan. “Jeff’s resume speaks for itself. Twenty years as the Four Corners Scouting Supervisor for two major-league clubs; head coach at Southern Utah; played professionally; basically, he’s been there, done that across all levels of baseball.

“However, the one thing that really jumped out at me, aside from his baseball acumen, is his deep-rooted passion for the players in Utah. He has great pride in the state, a state that has been underserved for a long time. Jeff’s baseball background and intimate knowledge of the state will resonate and, ultimately, benefit all the players, parents and coaches across Utah.”

Scholzen comes to the Prep Baseball Report after serving nine years as the Four Corners Scouting Supervisor with the Milwaukee Brewers (2011-2020). Prior to his run with the Brewers, Scholzen worked for the Los Angeles Angels for 11 years (1999-2010), serving in a similar capacity as the Four Corners Scouting Supervisor. With the Angels, Scholzen created an Angels Scout Team, in which he coached the likes of Bryce Harper, Kris Bryant, Kevin Gausman, Greg Bird, Tyler Wagner, Aaron Blair, Joey Rickard and Donn Roach, to name a few.

Prior to becoming a professional scout, Scholzen served as the head coach at Southern Utah University between 1993-1997. At the time, Scholzen was the youngest Division I head coach when he was first hired at 24 years old. The Southern Utah baseball program was dropped after the 2012 season.

A native of Utah, Scholzen played at Hurricane HS before moving on to Utah Valley CC and Eastern Oregon University. Scholzen played in the Angels’ organization in 1991-1992.

Now Scholzen will bring his baseball experiences, connections and passions for scouting to Utah’s prep baseball scene. Scholzen will work tirelessly to bring to you the most comprehensive high school baseball information Utah has ever seen, and provide scouting coverage to all corners of the state. But he can’t do it alone. Please email him at [email protected] with college commitments, relevant news, and top players in your area.

“I couldn't be more excited to join Prep Baseball Report, as this is something that will be a great opportunity for me and for the state of Utah,” Scholzen said. “To be able to join such a highly respected group of baseball people that merges a boots-on-the-ground approach while mixing the latest data metrics together, is going to be something that players and coaches alike will benefit from. As a champion for the state of Utah as the four corners big league scout for the past 20 years, I can now focus solely on players from the Beehive State, in helping them reach their full potential.”

Scholzen will also lend his scouting expertise to neighboring states, providing West Coast cross-checking services at the college, junior college and high school levels.
