NC: Mustangs Take Primetime Pitching Matchup

Brandon Hall
Mid-Atlantic Executive Director

The Burlington School  3 #5 East Rowan  6

A matchup that featured several pro and college follows did not disappoint.  The big matchup was on the mound where North Carolina commit, Cameron Padgett got the best of Arkansas commit, Tucker Holland.

Padgett worked into the 6th, striking out 9 without allowing a run.  The East Rowan offense was paced by Cobb Hightower with two hits.  Hightower's 1st knock opened the game up, as he turned around a 91mph offering from Holland, with authority through the middle.  A drag bunt hit from Padgett, positioned runners at 1st and 2nd where a wild pitch and SAC Fly would plate Hightower for the Mustangs opening run.

Holland worked 3.1 innings, striking out 6, but walking 5 on a brisk night.  Clay Haigh was solid in relief for The Burlington School, giving up just 3 hits and 1 run over the final 2.2 innings.

The Spartan offense would make some noise late in the game.  With two outs, down 6-0, they loaded the bases but the runner was caught off 3B with a hidden ball trick.  After an infield single fielded by now 3B Cameron Padgett, Padgett kept the ball as the next hitter began to step in the box.  As the runner on 3B stepped off the bag, Pagdett tagged him to end the threat.

In the 7th, the Spartans would bring the tying run to the plate, after scoring 3, but Nate Hayworth would nail down the save with a strikeout to end the game.

The loss drops The Burlington School to 3-1 overall.  They are scheduled to play Friday at Ravenscroft.  No. 5 East Rowan moves to 4-0 and host Piedmont on Friday night at Staton Field.

Cobb Hightower, SS, East Rowan HS, 2024
Smaller frame, thin, but with strength and quickness present.  Right handed hitter is balanced and aggressive with a short, direct stroke and excellent barrel feel.  Uses a leg kick to load back with a slight barrel tip in the load.  Flat through the zone.  Solid hand strength.  Works gap-to-gap.  Turned around
