New Jersey Underclass Games Preview: Right-Handed Pitchers

Sean McGrath
Scouting Director, New Jersey

Throughout the summer, we have had our eyes on most of the summer ball action and have seen many talented ball players. In this segment, we will be providing previews of players who are attending the Underclass Games on September 20th, broken down by position. These players will have a chance to display some of the notable tools we have already seen in front of many college coaches. Here is a highlight of some of the right-handed pitchers who will be in attendance.

While most of the recruiting world knows about 2018 Duke commit, Jack Carey, and 2018 Virginia Tech commit Alex Havlicek, these following eight pitchers are names that will create a bigger buzz on the recruiting trail after the event.

Matthew Goehrig, 2017 (Paramus Catholic)

+ Goehrig is 6-foot-2, 195 pounds and has a physical, broad frame. Goehrig keeps it clean and simple mechanically with solid linear movements after the quarter-turn of his lower half at the climax of his leg lift. He has long arm action with some whip to a ¾ release. At our Open ID event, he sat largely 81-84 and topped out at 85 miles-per-hour. His curveball showed solid spin but could be thrown with higher intent as I’d like to see it with a more crisp bite.

Sean Miller, 2017 (Pope John)
+ Miller is a 6-foot-3, 180 pound pitcher with room to fill out. Miller pitches with a long arm swing, ¾ arm slot and a repeatable delivery; only occasionally runs into an issue with hand break timing. Mid-summer, Miller was 81-83  and up to 85 miles-per-hour with small tail and a crisp, true slider at 75-76.
