Colleyville Heritage Walks-Off To Win District Title
April 25, 2018
COLLEYVILLE, TX - Two Power 25 teams met on Tuesday night for a cross-town district rivalry game. Only 2.6 miles separate No. 3 Colleyville Heritage and No. 20 Grapevine. Last season, Grapevine took 2-of-3 from Colleyville to take the district title. With these two teams meeting the last week of the season, Colleyville needed only one win to clinch the district title, while Grapevine needed to win both Tuesday and Friday to have a share of the title. 2018 RHP Noah Brown (Odessa JC) took the mound for Grapevine, while 2019 LHP Jakob Berger (Dallas Baptist) took the mound for Colleyville.
Both pitchers dominated the landscape for the first five innings, keeping both offenses off the board. In the bottom of the sixth Colleyville took a 1-0 lead when 2019 SS Bobby Witt Jr. hammered a deep fly ball off the right-centerfield wall for a triple. Then 2019 2B Mason Greer hit the first pitch he saw down the left field line for an RBI double. 1-0 Colleyville.
2019 LHP Jakob Berger pitched a fantastic game, and carried a no-hitter through six innings, striking out eight batters. But in the seventh, he hit the leadoff hitter and walked the next guy. So Coach McDougal called on SS Bobby Witt Jr. to close out the game with two on, no outs and a one run lead. The junior Oklahoma commit struck out the first batter he face, then gave up an infield single on a jam shot to third, loading the bases with one out. That’s when Grapevine’s Cyrus Campos tied the game up with a ground ball to second base. Colleyville 1, Grapevine 1. Witt Jr. got another ground ball for the third out, so we went to the bottom of the seventh with the score tied.
Dean Lawler singled to centerfield to start the inning, and advanced to second base on a throwing error from the outfield. With a bunt play on, Lawler slipped on his secondary lead, and got picked off on a strong throw from 2018 C Jonathan Hearn, huge out for Grapevine. Then 2018 OF Cole Brown doubled into the left field corner with one out. 2019 C Nicolas Balsano lined out sharply to centerfield for the second out of the inning. Grapevine elected to intentionally walk Bobby Witt Jr., bringing Mason Greer to the plate with the game on the line. In a 2-2 count, Greer sent a shot to left centerfield for the walk-off win, clinching the District Title for Colleyville Heritage.
