DFW Top Prospects Showcase: Preview, Roster, Schedule

Toby Bicknell
Texas Scouting Director

PLANO, TX - The Top Prospect Showcase is a staple in Prep Baseball Report's summer events and are highly attended by schools from all over the country. These events are so heavily attended for one reason: the players. Year in and year out, the best talent in that respective state is represented at their state specific Top Prospect Showcase.

The event will feature the best identified Class of 2019 prospects from the Dallas/Ft. Worth and surrounding Areas on Tuesday, June 19th at Prestonwood Academy. Close to 70 players will be in attendance, including numerous ranked players from the Texas 2019 Class.

Dallas Baptist commit 3B/RHP Chandler Freeman (Colleyville Heritage HS) is one of the top ranked two-way players in the Texas and was one of the Top Prospects from our Preseason All-State event. Freeman has the unique combination of power at the plate and a firm fastball on the mound. Ismael “Izzy” Lopez (Arlington Heights) is one of the top ranked shortstops in the state and is committed to Texas A&M. Oklahoma commit 3B Logan Kohler (Little Elm HS) is a super athletic left-handed hitter with a ton of upside. LHP Cade Fontenot (Fort Worth Christian) is committed to Xavier, has been up to 87 this spring, pitching in the 83-86 range. LHP Tye Sampson (Denton Guyer) is committed to Paris JC. Sampson has a ton of upside in his 6-foot-6 frame with a smooth arm swing and ability to spin his curveball.

Pitching is always at a premium and there will be a number of highly touted uncommitted arms in attendance. LHP Jack Hattrup (Plano West HS) will be bringing his three pitch arsenal with him. We last saw Hattrup in the playoffs when he threw a complete game shutout with nine punchouts. LHP Austin Teel (College Station HS) was 84-87 at the I-10 Border Battle and logged significant innings for College Station this year. RHP Elijah McCormack (Coppell HS) has been making waves early this summer with a fastball that gets into the upper-80’s and a deep breaking curveball. RHP Luke Douthitt (Plano West HS) was 83-86 when we saw him in an early season scrimmage.

For colleges that are looking for hitters, this event will be loaded with uncommitted position players, including left-handed hitting catcher Jimmy Crooks (Euless-Trinity HS). Crooks is a strong left-handed hitter and showed well at the DFW Area Code Tryouts, where he threw strikes to second base, posting pop times of 1.82,-1.92. Both Mason and Jacob Speaker (All Saints Episcopal) made a lot of noise during the high school season. Each of them are two-way players, and both can swing the bat. Jacob starts at shortstop, while Mason catches. During the high school season, we saw both pitch in relief, Mason was 87-90, while Jacob sat 87. SS Nathan White has an athletic-projectable frame and moves well in the middle of the field. Switch hitting shortstop Cody Akers (Azle HS) was one of the top prospects from the Houston Preseason I.D Showcase where he launched balls from both sides of the plate. 3B Anderson Acinger is committed to North Central Texas JC and hit in the middle of the order for Plano Senior this spring. SS Josh Bartolacci (Coppell HS) played outstanding for the Cowboys this season, garnering big knocks and playing outstanding defense. 3B Luke Stine (Lovejoy HS) won hitter of the week on April 16 when he had 3 HR’s and 9 RBI three games.  Fresh off a state championship for Eaton HS, OF Colbie Fritchen will also be in attendance.

This is an invite only event and is exclusive to the top 2019 prospects from Texas. The showcase will be featured on the Prep Baseball Report website, which is subscribed to by more than 800 colleges. Event information including statistics and scouting reports will also be posted on the Prep Baseball Report’s website, at www.PrepBaseballReport.com. Top players will be identified and ranked. Players’ edited videos will also be hosted in the players’ profile along with scouting reports and statistics.

There are only a limited number of spots available, so make sure you get your registration in as soon as possible. If you have any questions, please email Texas Scouting Director, Toby Bicknell at [email protected].
