Frisco Heritage vs. Frisco Liberty

Toby Bicknell
Texas Scouting Director

FRISCO, TX - Heritage and Liberty met on Monday night to begin the last series of the regular season. Each team sending their ace to the mound made this a no-brainer to attend. The Heritage Coyotes entered the game tied for fourth place in District 5-5A at 9-7, so this game had plenty of playoff implications riding on it.

Heritage got the scoring started early with an RBI double off the bat of left-handed hitting centerfielder, and 3-hole hitter Jacob Blaede, and their second run on a bases loaded walk. In the fourth, Heritage added to thier lead with an RBI single off the bat of Caleb Molo.

Liberty didn’t go down without a fight, getting a run in the bottom of the fourth win an RBI Sac Fly from 2021 3B Will Glatch. And another run two innings later when Glatch demolished an RBI double to right-centerfield.

Both starters put together competitive outings. 2019 RHP Tim Wynia (WVU) tallied 12 K’s in 5.1 innings for Liberty, setting the single season school record for punchouts at Liberty with 115. 2019 RHP Evan Vanek (Texas A&M) needed only 99 pitches to hold Liberty to two runs (one earned) on five hits, six strikeouts, and four walks.

Heritage got an insurance run in the top of the seventh when they ran a double steal with first and third against left-handed releiver. That score would hold up as 2020 CF/LHP Jacob Blaede closed out the game with two scoreless innings of releif.

Final Score: Heritage 4, Liberty 2.

SCOUT NOTES

Tim Wynia, RHP, Frisco Liberty HS, 2019
West Virginia commit. Approximately 6-foot-4, 185-pounds, the right-hander works from a high slot with a clean arm swing, average effort down the mound with slight head whack as he falls off to his glove side. Fastball was mostly 85-87, topping out at 88 a handful of times. Curveball flashes sharp 12/6 break with tight spin, and he can mix in a 79-83 mph changeup. Outside of scuffling with his command in the first inning he put together a quality outing where he recorded 12 strikeouts and set the school record for punchouts in a season with 115. After giving up two runs in the first with an HPB and 3 BB’s, Wynia settled in and struck out the side in the third. The breaking ball got better as the game went on and even though he took the loss, it was a solid performance, allowing only 4 hits and 3 earned runs.

Evan Vanek, RHP, Frisco Heritage HS, 2019
Texas A&M commit. Vanek has a wiry, long-limbed, athletic frame at approximately 6-foot-2, 175-pounds. The right-handed works from a ¾ slot with a long arm swing that has a wiggle in the back and quick hand out front. His fastball started out at 90-93 mph in the first with arm side life, settling in at 89-92 in the second, and 88-90 in the third. His slider was better than when we had seen him in the past, now showing more depth at 72-75 and appearing to stay on top of the ball better. In the bullpen he was flashing it for more strikes than he did in the game and also mixing in a changeup with depth and arm side fade. Athletic defender, loose hips, and quick feet on picks to first base, elude to his ability to come out of the pen early in his collegiate career. Earned the win with 5 IP, allowing 2 runs (1 earned), 5 H, 6 K, 4 BB.
