Houston Fall I.D.: Catching Analysis

Toby Bicknell
Texas Scouting Director

THE WOODLANDS, TX - On October 14, Prep Baseball Report Texas hosted an open event at College Park HS. Here is the catching analysis from that event.

CATCHERS

Mason Tomchesson, C, Klein Collins HS, 2019
Tomchesson is a blue-collar “gritty” backstop that is still looking for a place to play.  He started for Klein Collins all year in 2018, catching a solid pitching staff and stands 5-foot-11, 170-pounds with a lean-muscular frame. Posted pop times of 1.97-2.05 with a top velocity from the crouch of 77 mph. Really nice job during the bullpen session where he blocked and received well. Most importantly, we know as recruiters that catchers need to love being behind the plate, and I truly believe Mason loves to catch. He took a ball right off the through on a bounced fastball. Didn’t flinch, didnt say a word, just kept on going and performed well. A right-handed hitter with a balanced setup, his barrel stays in the zone a long time with a gap approach and flashed power to the middle of the field with a top exit velocity of 88 mph. Tough kid that will likely find a home very soon.

Garrett Whitaker, C, Alamo Heights HS, 2020
Whitaker stands 5-foot-11, 190-pounds with a strong, sturdy frame. He recently moved to Texas this summer and is still looking for a travel team for next summer. The right-handed hitter starts from a tall, open stance with relaxed hands, before he turns inward to load, then strides forward. Really like the energy in his lower half as he transfers through contact. Inside-out path with present strength and a top exit velocity of 90 mph produced carry in the middle of the field. Behind the dish, he has good lower half mobility and stays in his legs as he receives the baseball. Posted pop times of 2.05-2.25 with a top velocity from the crouch of 77 mph.

James McGlumphy, C/OF/RHP,  Round Rock HS, 2021
McGlumphy has a wiry, long-limbed frame at 6-foot, 155-pounds. The right-handed hitter starts from a wide base with his bat set on his back shoulder, then triggers his hands back into a front arm bar as he shifts his weight back and lifts his front heal as a timing mechanism. Long clean arm swing from all positions, including behind the plate, where made highly accurate throws with pop times of 2.0-2.19 with a top velocity from the crouch of 75 mph.

Kolby Bryant, C, McKinney North HS, 2020
Bryant stands 5-foot-10, 160-pounds, with a lean, athletic frame. He did an outstanding job of receiving during the bullpen session. He has good mobility in his lower half that allows him to sit deep in his one-stance. Super soft hands with a quiet body, blocks easy and centers the ball up. Posted pop times of 2.00-2.17 with a top velocity from the crouch of 72 mph.

Dane Swoboda, C/RHP, Robert E. Lee HS, 2020
Swoboda has a durable frame with broad shoulders and present strength at 6-foot-2, 208-pounds. The right-handed hitter starts from a wide base with his hands already set behind his back shoulder. Early leg lift to load back, slots the barrel into the zone with a front arm bar as he attacks the inside part of the ball. Current gap power, flashing some lift to the pull side with a top exit velocity on the field of 96 mph. Behind the plate, he posted pop times of 2.15-2.4 with a top velocity from the crouch of 78 mph.
