DALLAS, TX- This past Sunday our PBR Staff held the DFW Preseason ID at Prestonwood Christian Academy. Our staff was able to get a good look at some of the top prospects in the 2020-2023 classes from the DFW and surrounding areas, as we approach the 2020 high school season. Here is a small but thorough look at some of guys that stood out.

Quick Hits

A few Allen prospects had a nice showing at the preseason DFW ID at Prestonwood. Nick Mesquita, Lathan Van Ausdell, and Colin Huspen were all able to display natural athleticism and showcase their tools. Van Ausdell, showed some explosiveness with the bat as he drove some balls to the pull side gap, as well as twitchy actions in the field.  Mesquita also showed his natural athleticism with the bat as well as in the field.  He moved to the ball well in the field, quick transfer, throws with a long arm path and had good carry on throws to the plate. Last but not least Colin Huspen has a quality showing all around on the day. On the mound he ran his fastball up to 83 mph with some arm side run. At the plate had a balanced setup with a flat stroke that hit hard back spin line drives from gap to gap during his round of BP. Huspen also showed his natural athleticism in the field moving to the ball well and making accurate throws with good carry to home plate.

Jared White, Arkansas Commit, Tyler White – Both had solid showings on the mound on the day. Tyler ran his fastball up to 81 mph with tilt and late arm side action as well as flash a breaking ball with slurve shape at 64 mph. Jared White was up to 83 mph on the day with his fastball also with tilt and late arm side action, as well as a breaking ball with rolling action at 71 mph. Both were able to show high upside on the mound early in the year.

Cooper Strawn, Elliot Foreman a pair of travel ball team mates both showed off their tools on the day. Foreman (New Diana), looked a bit more physical and explosive since last seen in the fall. Showed an athletic simple setup with his big frame behind the dish, had a quick transfer on his throws down to second base at 2.05. At the plate, showed natural bat speed, with some lift in the swing but the tools are there to be successful on both sides of the ball. Strawn (Farmersville), an imposing 6-foot-4, 190 pounds, was able to throw his fastball at 81-82 mph with inconsistent action. The arm path was long and a little stiff but the ball came out well and there is a lot more room to grow in there as a pitcher.

Zach Zarko – 2021, L.D Bell, undersized infielder that showcased his tools and showed really well. Zarko came out of the gates and ran a 6.68 60-yard dash. Showed well in BP with an athletic setup small load and stride and naturally hit back spin line drives to the opposite field gap. In the field showed athletic actions with hands and feet that worked well together and threw the ball 84 mph across the diamond.

Tyler Abrego – 2021, Argyle two way talent that has lots of natural athletic ability and showed well both on the mound and in the field. On the mound was able to showcase an athletic delivery with some effort but had the ability to repeat pitches. Ran his fastball up to 85 mph on the day and paired it with a slider at 75-76 mph with more side to side action. In the field showed athletic actions on defense and a strong arm across the diamond at 86 mph.

Theo Kummer – 2022, John Paull II, had a quality round of BP getting great extension through the zone, driving the ball deep in the gaps, and hitting many balls hard in his round. Also behind the dish was able to show quick smooth transfer and accurate throws down to second base with his best time being a 1.96 pop time. The arm strength isn’t necessarily there yet but the transfer and accuracy of the throws played.

Paul Bonzagni, St. Edwards commit, came out of the gates with his fastball at 88-90 mph with tilt and late action. Throws with a long arm path and a high ¾ slot, there was some effort in the delivery which made it hard to repeat at times but there were enough quality strikes for it to play well. Bonzagni has a long loose frame with lots of project-ability as he continues to grow physically.
