Sliders Scout Day: Quick Hits

Toby Bicknell
Texas Scouting Director

SAN ANTONIO, TX - We had the pleasure to be a part of the South Texas Sliders Scout Day on Sunday at Trinity University. The Sliders still had a number of their 2019 grads playing in the Texas High School Playoffs, but we still got to see a very talented group overall. Here are some Quick Hits from Sunday. Be sure to stay tuned for full stats and videos this week.

+ A couple of sophomore shortstops showed quality actions on Saturday, Stanley Tucker (Lamar Consolidated) Thomas Schreck (Needville HS), and Garrett Thompson (New Braunfels). Tucker started the day with a 6.97 60-yard dash on a slow track. Standing 5-foot-9, 150-pounds, Tucker has a quick-twitch frame, took a solid round of BP, flashing some pull side power with a home run. Moves easy at shortstop, soft hands, quick exchange, and tons of arm strength across the infield (87 mph). Thomas Schreck stands 5-foot-9, 155-pounds, with a lean-strong frame. Schreck plays fast and has polished footwork, creating good angles on ground balls while keeping everything in the midline of his body. Easy arm action that plays well from every angle. Garrett Thompson stands 6-foot, 160-pounds. The left-handed hitter took an outstanding round of batting practice, he has quick hands and a loose finish of the barrel. At shortstop he play through the ball with quick footwork and smooth actions. For schools that are looking for middle infielders in the 2020 class, add these three to the must see list.

+ 2020 OF/RHP Christopher Shull (MacArthur) stands 6-foot-1, 175-pounds. The right-hander has a clean arm stroke and simple delivery down the mound. The ball jumps out of his hand at 87-88 with life. The slider has tight rotation, 11/5 shape, and sharp break at 78-80 mph. Shull also threw 91 from the outfield and registered an exit velocity of 86 mph. The right-handed hitter has loose hands and the barrel stays in the zone a long time.

+ 2019 RHP James Taylor (Fort Bend Christian) showed a quick arm on the mound, working from a high slot with a long arm swing, his fastball was mostly 83-84, while his slider was 68-69 and shows signs of becoming a quality pitch with tight rotation and depth.

+ 2020 RHP Perry Burkett (Incarnate Word) was 83-85 from a high-¾ slot with a 74-77 mph slider, and a 77 mph changeup.

+ 2020 OF/LHP Ty Fontenot (Brandeis) is quite strong for a sophomore with a 6-foot-4, 200-pound frame. The left-handed hitter made hard contact during BP, launching balls deep to right field, including a home run. He also threw 88 from the outfield.

+ 2020 1B/RHP Miles Hellums (Tuloso Midway) showed gap power during BP, driving the ball with authority to the right-centerfield gap. On the mound, the right-handers fastball was 82-84, and he showed a quality changeup that had good depth at 78 mph.

+ 2019 OF/RHP Martin Guanajuato has a wiry, quick twitch frame at 6-foot-11, 150-pounds. The right-handed hitter has loose hands at the plate and threw 85 mph from the outfield.

+ 2020 OF/3B Kauner Porter (Samuel Clemens) threw 94 mph from the outfield, 89 on the infield. The right-handed hitter stands 6-foot-3, 195-pounds, and made hard contact during BP.

+ 2019 LHP Elias Rivera (Veterans Memorial) has some upside at 6-foot-2, 170-pounds. He topped out at 83 mph, pitching at 80-81 from a ¾ slot. His curveball was 67-71, but it was his changeup that flashed heavy arm side depth at 79 mph several times. Although the velocity of the pitch is too close to his fastball, it shows the same action as a heavy two-seamer, while his fastball cuts across the plate and into right-handed hitters.

+ 2020 OF/LHP Matt Scannell (St. Mary’s Hall) is a left-handed hitter with pop in his bat. He gets the barrell through the zone with quick hands and natural lift. The left-hander threw 84 mph from the outfield, then pitched 80-82 with a 70-71 mph slider, a 64-66 mph curveball, and a 74-76 mph changeup.

+ 2020 1B Dakota Palmer (Needville) has a smooth swing from the left side and plays with a bounce in his step at first base, works well around the bag and good glove action on picks.

+ 2020 RHP/OF Dylan Bright (San Antonio Christian) works from a high slot with a long arm stroke with a loose arm swing. He pumped strikes at 82-84 with tilt on his fastball. Shows feel for both a 12/6 curveball (71-72), and a 77-78 mph changeup, and a slider at 76.

+ 2020 C Riggs Barrett (Calallen) has a strong, sturdy frame at approximately 6-foot-1, 200-pounds. He has good carry on throws to second base (78 mph) with pop times ranging from 2.0-2.08. The right-handed hitter

+ 2021 C Gabriel Herrera (Reagan) did a nice job behind the plate during bullpens and threw strikes to second base during the catcher workout with pop times of 1.92, 2.07, 2.19, and 2.22.

2022 C John Ramirez (Brandeis) is just a rising freshman but has the look of a high level hitter that will be on recruiting boards soon. He has strong hands, good rhythm, and the ball jumps off his barrel, flashing power to the pull side.

+ 2020 1B/RHP Trajan Lee (Houston Christian) stands 6-foot-2, 185-pounds, and moves around the field with presence and conviction. The right-handed hitter took aggressive hacks during BP with big leg kick and strength in his hands. On the mound, the right-hander works from a high-¾ slot and flashes tilt on his fastball at 79-81. His changeup has good depth at 67-72, and he spun his curveball at 72 mph with good arm speed.

+ 2020 OF Christopher Stallings (Kinkaid) threw with some of the best accuracy and carry in the outfield with a top velocity of 88.

+ 2019 OF Wyatt Young (Kinkaid) is a strong right-handed hitter that made loud contact during BP and showed strength in the barrel.  At 5-foot-11, 180-pounds, he has strong, muscular frame, and threw 84 mph from the outfield.
