Sliders Scout Day: Quick Hits (2020)
May 29, 2019
SAN ANTONIO, TX - On Sunday, we attended The South Texas Sliders Scout Day for the third year in a row. There was a ton of talent on display from the 2020-2023 classes at the University of Incarnate Word’s brand new facility. In order to break up the Quick Hits Scout Notes, we are going to take a look at each grad class, today is the 2020 grads. For College Recruiters looking for uncommitted players, this group is a must see early this summer.
2020 RHP Dylan Bright (San Antonio Christian) works from a high-¾ slot with a long arm swing and is likely going to make another velocity jump before he finishes his prep career. His fastball was 86-88, and he threw his curveball for strikes at 72-74, and ripped off some plus sliders at 79-80 mph. Oh yeah, he also has a 4.57 GPA and apparently made a 30 on the ACT. Academic schools, eat your heart out.
2020 RHP Matthew Krall (CC Veterans Memorial HS) stands 6-foot-4, 190-pounds with a long-limbed, physical frame. The right-hander was 86-88, spun a 74-75 mph curveball and threw his changeup at 74.
We have seen 2020 RHP Perry Burkett (Incarnate Word Academy) multiple times and he can really spin his slider anytime he wants at 75-77. His fastball hit 86 in warmups and was mostly 83-85 during his one inning of work with a 79 mph changeup.
2020 RHP Oscar Zepeda (Incarnate Word Academy) is another arm that is starting to climb in velocity as his fastball was 87-88, and he throws a firm slider at 76. Zepeda repeats his delivery and has excellent feel to pitch and is likely going to add more velocity as he continues to mature physically.
2020 RHP/1B Miles Hellums (Tuloso Midway) has a physically strong frame at 6-foot-2, 192-pounds. He made hard during BP, then topped out at 88 during the game, sitting 85-86 and throwing a 72-76 mph breaking ball.
2020 RHP Brent Green (Calallen HS) has an athletic frame at 6-foot, 170-pounds. The right-hander was 87-88 from a ¾ slot with a 76-80 mph changeup and a 70-76 mph slider.
2020 OF/LHP Matt Scannell (St. Mary’s Hall) is a primary outfield and LHH, but the arm works on the mound and he was 84-85 on Sunday with a 72-74 mph curveball and 77 mph changeup. The arm action is clean and he threw 87 from the outfield
2020 SS Thomas Schreck (Needville HS) posted his best 60 time to with a 6.79 (laser) and threw 85.9 across the infield. SS Stanley Tucker (Lamar Consolidated HS) ran the fastest 60 time with a 6.65. 2020 SS David Lopez (Eagle Pass HS) started the day with a 6.98 60-yard dash and showed solid actions at short with an 82.2 velocity across the diamond. Schreck, Tucker and Lopez can all start and finish the pivot with ultra quick hands. LHH Garrett Thompson (New Braunfels HS) swung it well during BP and ran a 6.8 60. 2020 2B/3B Jared Roiz (Eagle Pass Winn HS) is a LHH that posted a 90 exit velo, showing strength in the barrel as he hammered the ball around the yard and homered to right field. 2020 1B Colton Rozypal (Calallen HS) stands 6-foot-2, 210-pounds with a strong, muscular frame. Serious power during BP (97 mph) with multiple homers that looked as if they were hit with a Tiger Wood’s driver; balls were still rising as they went out of the yard. 2020 2B/SS Colton Harris (Houston Christian) is a gamer-grinder with a simple swing that he repeats easy, making hard contact and posting a top exit velocity of 88 mph.
