Twelve Scout Day: 2021 Quick Hits

Phil Haig
Texas Scouting Director

KATY T.X.- The first day of the Texas Twelve Scout Day featured plenty of the states top prospects and several talented uncommitted prospects from their 2021 class. Here are some highlights from Thursdays action.

TOP PROSPECTS

Ty Sexton, RHP, Lake Creek, 2021
Recent Texas A&M commit, lead the way on the mound with a dominant performance. Sexton threw tons of quality strikes and when he missed it was in a quality location. The fastball on the day averaged 88.6 mph and topped out at 90.0 mph with an average spin rate of 1927 and a tilt of 12:30. Was able to create a tough angle on hitters down in the zone and has slight cut to the ball with an average  induced vertical break of 17.5 and horizontal break of 4.2 inches. Also showed a curveball that played well of the fastball and was able to get a few uncomfortable swings and takes.

Ty Hodge, SS, A&M Consildated, 2021
Texas A&M Recruit. Threat at all times when he comes to the plate, showing quality at bats on the day, stole a couple bags, and took the extra base as the runner. Hodge continues to add strength and good weight each time we see him and continue to look forward to his progress as a player.

John Spikerman, MIF, Lake Creek, 2021
Oklahoma Recruit. Showed his ability to be a spark plug and “pest” for the Twelve Maroon lineup on the day as well. Working a couple walks and also stealing a couple bases and taking the extra base as the runner on the day.

Chanden Scamardo, C, College Station, 2021
Texas A&M Recruit. Physical frame catcher that continues to improve each time out. Shows the ability to handle quality arms behind the dish with his ability to work underneath the ball while receiving. At the plate, is a physical presence in the box and has the ability to all parts of the park.

Graiden West, IF, Tompkins, 2021
Rice Recruit. hit a ball on the screws today to RCF. He showed the ability to stay on the ball and drive it with backspin the other way for an RBI on the day. Has a frame that can add more strength but showed the ability to hit the ball hard .

Jake Kolkhorst, RHP, Brenham, 2021
TCU Recruit. Was up to 90.8 mph on the day averaging 89.5 mph with 2126 spin rate and a 1:15 tilt. The induced vertical break is 14.4 inches and horizontal break is 12.1 inches. Kolkhorst throws from a low ¾ slot and was throwing more of a curveball than slider that averaged 70 mph on the day. Also showed a changeup averaging 78.4 mph.

Intriguing uncommitted arms

Trenton Chenard, RHP, Weimar, 2021
Uncommitted. Was able to throw a successful inning on the day showing a FB at 87-89 and a cutter/slider off of it at 80 mph. Chenard strides a little across his body and throws from a low ¾ slot creating a tough look on hitters. The fastball got a couple swings and misses as well as weak contact on the day. The breaking ball has room to improve and is more like a small cutter right now but was able to show promise with the fastball and shows an upside on the mound.

Matthew Rheaume, RHP, Memorial, 2021
Showed promise with the fastball touching 90 on the day and averaging 86.9 mph with 2105 spin rate and an IVB of 17.1 inches and HB of 4.1 inches . Rheaume has a strong and sturdy frame, pitches with a short arm path, high front side and some natural deception down the mound. We only got to see a couple offspeed pitches but was able to flash promise with the fastball and will be one to follow.

Delbert Quint Graves, RHP, Hudson, 2021
Was another uncommitted arms that flashed promise and gave people a reason to follow along with for the summer. He pounded the zone with the FB up to 87.4 mph and averaged 86.6 mph. He only threw one changeup on the day and it showed true straight changeup spin and action, which plays along great with his over the top arm slot. Also was able to show a sharp breaking ball up to 80 with gloveside action.

Uncommitted Prospects

Bennett Hanks, OF, Episcopal, 2021
Hanks barrelled multiple balls on the day featuring a swing with good extension, also hit one to deep left field.

Cody Kingman, RHP, A&M Consolidated, 2021
Very intriguing prospect that has a projectable, tall frame with wide shoulders. Has a bit of drop and drive to his delivery and falls off slightly to the 1st base side and flashed ability to throw fastball for strikes on both sides of the plate.

Patrick Chastain, C, Katy Tompkins, 2021
Small, agile catcher with good catch and throw skills and good receiver behind the plate as well.

Blake Compton, C, MacArthur, 2021
Hit the ball well to all fields and also showed off a good arm on a difficult throw to 2nd base.

Tristan Thomas, LHP, Clements, 2021
Left-handed pitcher with a long arm swing from a near over the top slot with a high front side. Commanded the fastball well and flipped in a big curveball flashing the ability to land it in the zone for a strike.

Katcher Halligan, 1B, St. John’s, 2021
Smooth swinging left-handed hitter with a short stroke to the ball and flashing power to the pull side. Fields his position well at first base as well.

Max Villarreal, C/IF, Fort Bend Travis, 2021
Villarreal is a ballplayer. Made plays at SS in the first game and then jumped behind the plate in the second game and showed good, clean actions at both positions.

Austin Schwarz, IF, Cuero, 2021
Schwarz is another ballplayer in this 2021 class for Twelve. Made some good plays and tough plays at SS and 3B and also hit multiple balls with authority up the middle and to the pull side.

Craig Kelly, IF/C, Fort Bend Christian Academy, 2021
Versatile player on defense playing the middle infield and behind the plate. Good athlete that handled those positions well and barrelled up multiple baseballs to the pull side in his two games.
