Upperclass Games: Outfield Analysis

PLANO, TX - On Saturday, October 7, some of the top talent from the 2018 and 2019 classes met at Prestonwood Christian Academy in Plano, TX. Here is the outfield analysis from that even.

 


OUTFIELDERS

 

Riley Lambert OF / Midway, TX / 2018

Uncommitted. Lambert is a quick-twitch, left-handed hitting outfielder with projectable tools and a 5-foot-10, 160-pound frame. He has a relaxed setup, smooth load with a balanced swing, short path, and quick hands. Consistently shows up on time, uses the middle of the field, but can still turn on the inside pitch. Hands work through the zone with a loose finish, accelerates the barrel through contact. During the game, Lambert ran a 4.25 to first on a hard ground ball to shortstop, stole second and third base, threw 85 mph from the outfield, and posted an exit velocity of 88 mph. Ran a 6.89 60-yard dash. In the outfield, Lambert has good timing and rhythm through the ball with a clean exchange. Throws with carry and accuracy at 89 mph from a high slot and long arm stroke. 

 

 

Reid Dalrymple LHP / OF / Burnet, TX / 2018

Uncommitted. Dalrymple has a long-limbed frame at 6-foot, 185-pounds with plenty of room to add strength a he continues to develop. Started the day by running a 6.99-second 60-yard dash. The left-handed hitter starts from a wide base with a slightly open stance. Turns his front shoulder in as he loads into a more crouched stance with a short stride, early rhythm and good balance. Strong hitter with an aggressive mentality during batting practice, short path to get extended out front. Natural lift with a slightly uphill path gets the barrel on plane and creates hard, loud contact from the middle-to-pull side, ball jumps off his bat with a 93 mph exit velocity. Defensively, Dalrymple plays through the ball with quick feet and athleticism into his crow-hop, clean quick exchanges allow his arm to work fast from a long, over the top slot, getting good extension out front and creating excellent carry at 90 mph with an athletic finish.

 

 

Payne McKay OF / RHP / New Braunfels Canyon, TX / 2019

Uncommitted. McKay has a lean-muscular frame at 6-foot, 170-pounds. The right-handed hitter has life in his hack with loose hands and strength at contact. Slow load back as he slides his hands back, then strides out. Flat path into the zone with a high finish creates lift and power to the pull side as he sinks into his back leg. Gap approach, strong top hand, ball jumps off his bat (86 mph exit velocity). In two at-bats during the game, he crushed a triple to left-centerfield (4.83 on the turn), and hammered a deep fly ball to centerfield. In the outfield, McKay throws from an over the top slot with loose arm swing at 87 mph. 

 

 

Drew Kennedy OF / RHP / Flower Mound, TX / 2018

Kennedy stands 6-foot, 165-pounds with a quick-twitch, wiry-strong frame. The Uncommitted senior began the day posting one of the best 60 times of the event by running a 6.86. During the game, the right-handed hitter turned on an inside fastball and back-spun a home run to left of centerfield. Kennedy starts from a neutral stance with his front foot turned inward. Simple load and relaxed rhythm as he triggers his hands back. Short stride with balance, head stays still as his hips rotate and he slots the barrel on plane. Quick bat through the zone with a short path keeps his hands inside the ball. Delivers the barrel with strength and extension through contact with an exit velocity of 89 mph. In the outfield, he is an accurate, quick arm that works well from back to front  at 88 mph. A two-way player and right-handed pitcher, Kennedy works from a high-¾ slot with a long arm stroke and all three pitches coming from the same window. Quick hand from back to front, his fastball ranged from 81-84 mph. Good feel for off-speed with a sharp cutter that has more 11/5 shape at 75-76 mph. Also has a good changeup that he throws with fastball arm speed at 67-70 mph. 

 

 

Thomas Cain OF / RHP / Flower Mound, TX / 2018

Cain has an athletic frame at 5-foot-11, 175-pounds. Posted a 6.83-second 60-yard dash. The right-handed hitter starts from a balanced stance with quiet rhythm in his hands. Smooth load back as he triggers his hands, short stride, lands balanced with good energy in his back leg as he initiates his transfer. Line drive-gap approach during batting practice, good lower half control and feel for the barrel with an exit velocity of 88 mph. Swung the bat very well during the game, smoked a double off the left field wall and singled through the left side, running a 4.62 on the turn at first base. Heads up base runner, gets to full speed quickly on the bases, stole home on a delay steal. Defensively, he plays through the ball with quick footwork, and made accurate throws from a short, high-¾ slot with a quick arm stroke at 84 mph. 

 

 

Sage Hampton OF / 3B / Waxahachie, TX / 2019

Uncommitted. Hampton has a strong, projectable frame at 6-foot-1, 185-pounds. The right-handed hitter starts from a tall, open stance, smooth load as he shifts his weight back and uses a slight toe-tap for timing as he strides forward, walking away from his hands, creating good separation and landing in an aggressive launch position. Short path with a quick top hand punch to contact allows him to get the barrel out front and back spin balls to the pull side. Back leg drives through contact with a solid lower half transfer, loose finish through contact and an exit velocity of 93 mph. In the outfield, Hampton has a good sense of timing as he plays through ball and throws from a ¾ slot with accuracy at 83 mph. Ran a 7.11 60-yard dash.

 

 

Jayden Drake C / OF / Centennial, TX / 2018

Drake is a switch-hitting, catcher-outfielder with a lean-muscular frame at 5-foot-11, 170-pounds. From the left side of the plate, Drake has loose-quick rhythm with good energy in his lower half. Starts from an open stance and rolls inward as he loads his hands down and back. Quick hips as rotates to transfer his back knee to contact, slightly uphill path with good extension through contact. Right-handed, he starts from a quiet, wider stance, but still slightly open. Smooth load with a short stride as his hands load back, lands balanced. Quick hands through the zone with good barrel awareness. During the game, Drake ran a 4.5 on a ground ball to second base, and had an infield single. In the outfield he plays through the ball with quick footwork, and an accurate arm at 84 mph from a short, high-¾ slot. Behind the plate, Drake threw 76 mph from the crouch with pop times of 2.14-2.3.

 

 

Camden Matthews OF / LHP / Hebron, TX / 2019

Matthews has an athletic, wiry, quick-twitch frame at 5-foot-10, 150-pounds, with plenty of room to add strength as he continues to mature. A long stride runner, he started the day by posting a 6.84-second 60-yard dash. The left-handed hitter starts from a balanced stance and uses a reverse leg lift to load as he pushes his weight back and triggers his hands down and back. Flat path into the zone as he gets the barrel on plane early, working slightly uphill with line drive power, loose finish, and an exit velocity of 78 mph. Hands work well through the zone, good barrel awareness and feel for hitting.  In the outfield, Matthew plays through the ball with quick footwork and throws from a ¾ slot with a long arm stroke at 81 mph. 

 

 

Bradlee Evans OF / RHP / Bryan, TX / 2018

5-foot-7, 168-pound frame. The right-handed hitter starts from a slightly open stance with his hands over his back shoulder. Quick rhythm as he strides forward and lower half rotates to contact. Flat path produced line drives through the infield and hard ground balls with an exit velocity of 77 mph. In the outfield, he made accurate throws to the plate from a high-¾ slot at 76 mph.
