Freshmen Free East: Pitcher Breakdown

In mid-February, over 30 players from all corners of DC and Virginia descended on Coastal Sports in Norfolk, Virginia for the Freshmen Free Showcase, our first event of 2021. Today, we conclude our breakdown of the event with the pitchers: 

 

 

 

 

Will Ashman OF / LHP / Frank Cox, VA / 2024

Ashman is 6-1 with a lankier athletic frame that has added some strength and has plenty of projection left to it. He throws from a high three-quarters arm slot, very short free arm action and normal effort to his delivery. Drop and drive delivery, shoulders are slightly uphill and closed, lands square with an athletic finish. Fastball was 69-73, with downward plane and some late run to armside. Curveball was 61-62 with good armspeed and sharp 1/7 break to it. Change-up was 64-65 with some armspeed and heavy fade.

 

 

Brett Beasley SS / RHP / Atlantic Shores Christian, VA / 2025

Beasley is 6-1 with a lankier athletic frame that has a lot of projection left to it. He throws from a low three-quarters arm slot, long loose quick arm action and some effort to his delivery. Shoulders are uphill and closed, lands closed with a slight fall off finish and some recoil. Fastball was 73-78, with heavy armside run that gets some late depth as well. Curveball was 67-70 with good armspeed and hard downer 10/4 break to it.

 

 

Colin Benson C / SS / Ocean Lakes, VA / 2024

Benson is 5-10 with a lankier athletic frame that has plenty of projection left to it. He throws from a high three-quarters arm slot, longer free arm action and normal effort to his delivery. Drop and drive delivery, shoulders are uphill and closed, lands on line with an athletic finish. Fastball was 66-70, with some late sink to it. Curveball was 60-63 with good armspeed and gradual 11/5 break to it, showing some shape.

 

 

Dawson Newman LHP / OF / Great Bridge , VA / 2024

Newman is 5-11 with a lankier athletic frame that has some strength present and plenty of projection left to it. He throws from a low three-quarters arm slot, long free arm action and easier effort to his delivery. Drop and drive crossfire delivery, shoulders are uphill and closed, lands closed with an athletic finish. Fastball was 69-72, with some sink to it and a bit of late armsidde run. Curveball was 59-60 with good armspeed and gradual 1/7 break to it, showing some shape and a chance to tighten into a good pitch as he develops.

 

 

Brayden Pendleton RHP / OF / Greenbrier Christian, VA / 2024

Pendleton is 6-1 with a very lanky athletic frame that has a lot of projection left to it. He throws from a three-quarters arm slot, long loose arm action and normal effort to his delivery. Shoulders are uphill and closed, lands on line with an athletic finish. Fastball was 72-76, with some late sink and heavy armside run. Curveball was 63-64 with good armspeed and gradual 10/4 break to it, some shape present. Change-up was 71-72 with some armspeed and heavy sink.

 

 

Wyatt Simmons RHP / OF / Hickory , VA / 2024

Simmons is 6-2 with a lanky athletic frame that has a lot of projection left to it. He throws from a low three-quarters arm slot, long free arm action and normal effort to his delivery. Drop and drive delivery, shoulders are uphill and on line, lands slightly closed with an athletic finish. Fastball was 71-74, with some downward plane and late armside run. Curveball was 61-62 with good armspeed and sharp 11/5 break to it, some shape present. Change-up was 68-72 with good armspeed and late heavy fade. Slider was 66-67 with good armspeed and hard sharp 10/4 break to it.

 

 

Daniel Smith RHP / 1B / Granby , VA / 2024

Smith is 6-1 with a long lanky frame that has a lot of projection left to it. He throws from a very low three-quarters arm slot, long free arm action and normal effort to his delivery. Drop and drive delivery, shoulders are uphill and closed, lands slightly closed with an athletic finish. Fastball was 68-70, with heavy late sink to it. Curveball was 60-61 with some armspeed and gradual 12/6 break to it. Change-up was 61-63 with some armspeed and heavy fading action.

 

 

Dylan Whitmire C / 3B / Frank W. Cox, VA / 2024

Whitmire is 5-10 with a lankier athletic frame that has some strength present and plenty of projection left to it. He throws from a high three-quarters arm slot, short free arm action and easier effort to his delivery. Shoulders are slightly uphill and closed, lands slightly closed with an athletic finish. Fastball was 70-72, with some late armside run. Curveball was 55-56 with some armspeed and big gradual 12/6 break to it. Change-up was 66-67 with good armspeed and some late cutting action to it.
